St. Joseph Blacksnakes News Release

St. Joseph, MO - One team was shutout for the second consecutive game in Sioux City, only St. Joe was the one pitching the shutout with the 7-0 win. The 'Snakes (6-16) ended their 10-game losing streak and beat Sioux City (11-11) for the first time in six tries.

Mark Nussbeck (1-1) was outstanding in his return from the disabled list, allowing just one baserunner over six innings. Chris Grossman singled off of Nussbeck to start the third and was erased on a double play as Nussbeck faced the minimum 18 hitters in his six innings.

JD Scholten (2-1) started strong for the Explorers, but tired in the sixth. With the game scoreless, St Joe had a big inning to pace the victory. Ben Thomas and Mark Burke had consecutive singles with one out. Then Cody Nowlin drove a 3-1 fastball for a double to right scoring Thomas with Burke advancing to third. Terrell Merriman walked to load the bases for Jake Whitesides. Whitesides drove a triple off the right-center field fence to clear the bases for a 4-0 lead. Jefferson Infante would get Whitesides home with a sacrifice fly for the fifth run of the inning and the lead was 5-0.

Sioux City would only threaten against Shingo Mitsumori in the seventh with a pair of runners, but Mitsumori would not allow a run in his one inning of work. Then Vinnie DeChristofaro finished off the shutout with a pair of scoreless frames.

The offense added a pair more in the ninth on run-scoring hits by Josh Buhagiar and Ben Thomas to salt away the 7-0 victory.

All ten hitters reached safely and Ben Thomas and Jake Whitesides had a pair of hits each with Whitesides driving in three.

St. Joe looks to make it two in a row and can take the series with a win in the rubber match Sunday. The 'Snakes will send Dustin Kupper (1-0) to the mound against Sioux City's Billy Keppinger (1-2). Game time is 5:05pm and our Heartland Health Pre-Game Show hits the air at 4:45pm. St. Joe then heads home for a six-game homestand that begins Tuesday against Sioux Falls.
