Skeeters Take Seesaw Battle in Game One

September 21, 2016 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release

Sugar Land, TX- In a game that featured three lead changes, the York Revolution were outlasted by the Sugar Land Skeeters, 7-5 in Game One of the Freedom Division Championship Series on Tuesday night at Constellation Field. Down 1-0 in the best-of-five series, the Revs will look to head home with a split as Game Two is set for Wednesday evening.

York wrestled the lead in the sixth inning, scoring three times for a 5-4 advantage. Josh Wilson got things started with a leadoff double to left-center off Roy Merritt, making his return to the Skeeters after signing with the Los Angeles Dodgers during the season's second half. After a sacrifice bunt from Travis Witherspoon, Wilson scored on an RBI single down the third base line by Jared Mitchell. Following a two-out walk to Andres Perez, both runners advanced on a wild pitch, and Kevin Rivers, who blasted a home run the inning before, smacked a two-run single up the middle to give York the one-run edge.

Sugar Land responded with three unanswered in the late innings. Travis Scott walked and Delwyn Young doubled to left-center to set the stage with one out in the seventh. York lefty Scott Rice retired Lance Zawadzki on a ground out with the infield in for the second out, but after a pitching change, Wilfredo Rodriguez tapped a soft grounder to third, causing Bryan Pounds to charge and attempt a throw on the run to preserve the lead. Rivers laid out attempting to hold the bag at first, but the throw sailed just wide, deflecting into foul territory as both runs scored. Juan Martinez added a leadoff home run to left field in the eighth for the final margin.

The Revs missed opportunities to score early in the game, rallying to load the bases with two outs in both the first and fourth innings against Skeeters righty Sean Gallagher, but being turned aside both times. York stranded 11 runners on the night.

The Revs did strike first in the second inning on a two-out RBI single to center by Witherspoon for a 1-0 lead.

Sugar Land answered in the third with a sac fly to right by Rene Tosoni. Rodriguez then tagged a two-run homer to left-center with two outs in the fourth, lifting the Skeeters in front 3-1.

Rivers blasted a home run to right-center in the top of the fifth, bringing the Revs within 3-2.

Sugar Land got that run back in the bottom of the fifth when Young yanked a two-out RBI single to left, making it a 4-2 game.

Sugar Land's bullpen faced the minimum over the final three innings with Zech Zinicola (1-0) claiming the win after a 1-2-3 seventh, and Derrick Loop notching the save, rolling a game-ending double play in the ninth. Rice (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing the two unearned runs in the seventh.

Rivers led the Revs offense with a 2-for-4 night, driving in three runs.

Young went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles to pace the Skeeters.

Notes: The Revs have won one of their previous three playoff series when falling behind 0-1 (2011 Championship Series vs. Long Island). Sugar Land improves to 4-8 all-time in playoff games with all four wins having occurred against York. York righty Micah Owings (7-6, 4.30) squares off with Sugar Land southpaw Aaron Thompson (9-5, 3.98) in Game Two on Wednesday night at 8:05 p.m. EDT. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, woyk1350.com, and on the WOYK mobile app beginning at 7:45 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.
