LANCASTER, Pennsylvania - The Skeeters swept its first doubleheader in franchise history with two wins over the first-place Barnstormers at Clipper Magazine Stadium Tuesday evening. Sugar Land won the first game 5-2 and the second 3-2 to pick up two games on Lancaster with two games left in the series.

GAME ONE

Scoring started in the bottom of the first when the Barnstormers leadoff batter Gilberto Mejia reached on a leadoff walk. After stealing second, the second baseman was pushed to third on a fly-out from Adam Godwin. One batter later, Mejia scored on Blake Gailen's sac-fly into center to break the scoreless tie, 1-0. Mark Brackman (7-7) was saddled with the loss after giving up all five runs in five innings.

The Skeeters responded in kind in the top of the second inning when Steve Moss hit a solo home run (6) into right-center field to tie the game back up, 1-1. Dionys Cesar reached on an error from the first baseman Travis Denker and ended up on second base before he stole third. Amadeo Zazueta smacked a RBI single into left to put the Skeeters ahead 2-1.

Two innings later, Sugar Land increased the lead to four with three runs in the fourth. Cesar reached on a single and Iggy Suarez walked with one out to put runners on first and second. Manny Mejia capitalized on a hanging curve by smoking a double into left-center field scoring both runners, 4-1. Ofilio Castro knocked his 42nd RBI in with a single past the shortstop allowing Mejia to score the third run of the inning, 5-1.

Lancaster managed one run in the bottom of the fifth when Mejia was knocked with a passed-ball with runners on the corners. Francisco Hernandez scored from third after reaching earlier in the inning on a double off the right-field wall. Bridger Hunt singled him to third before the lead was cut to three, 5-2.

Kelvin Villa (2-5) picked up his first win as a starting pitcher firing five innings giving up just two runs, one earned, while striking out seven. Roberto Giron locked in his second save of the season with two shutout innings while striking out three in the game-one win.

GAME TWO

The Skeeters scored first in game two of the doubleheader Tuesday night at Clipper Magazine Stadium. After a one-out walk to Dionys Cesar, Matt Hagen blasted a two-run homer (6) over the left-center field wall to put the good guys in front, 2-0, in the second inning.

Starter Dwayne Pollock (11-2) gave up a third run in the third when Dominic Ramos knocked his league-leading seventh triple into deep left-center field allowing Ofilio Castro to score from first off his single, 3-0. Pollock managed all seven innings but gave up all three earned runs on seven hits with just two strikeouts to two walks.

Jason Lane (5-4) got the call in game two and didn't give up a run until the fourth inning. Ryan Harvey reached on a leadoff double down the left-field line before he was brought home by a Bridger Hunt RBI triple into center. With the score 3-1 in favor of the Skeeters, the Barnstormers scored their second off a solo home run (18) thanks to Blake Gailen in the fifth to cut the lead to one, 3-2.

Lane finished with five innings and four strike outs while giving up just one walk and two earned runs before Saul Rivera and Gary Majewski closed it out for the Skeeters with his 19th save of the season.

Coming up next...The Sugar Land Skeeters (20-19) continue the four-game series against the Lancaster Barnstormers (23-15) with game three Wednesday night at Clipper Magazine Stadium. Jeff Farnsworth (1-2, 5.36 ERA) makes his third start for the Skeeters against Alan Johnson (10-5, 5.38 ERA) and the Barnstormers with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 p.m. CDT.
