Wenatchee Wild News Release
WENATCHEE, Wash. - Carl-Johan Sjogren (Sodertalje, Sweden) struck for two goals Friday night in his return to the Wenatchee Wild lineup after missing eight games with an injury, but it wasn't enough in a 6-3 loss to the Chicago Hitmen at the Town Toyota Center.
Despite outshooting the Hitmen 19-10 in the first period, Wenatchee found itself down 2-0 at the first intermission. David Clark scored the first goal of the game for the Hitmen at the 6:18 mark on a wrist shot from the point. Chicago's second goal came during a power play with 5:58 remaining in the first period when Gabe Gervais redirected a shot from the blue line by Vincent Somma.
Wenatchee cut Chicago's lead in half early in the second period on an even strength marker by Ben Carey (Centennial, Colo.). After receiving a long pass from Kyle Huson (Parker, Colo.), Carey skated around the defense after a Chicago line change and beat goaltender Peter Mason 5-hole on a backhander.
Chicago regained its 2-goal lead less than a minute after Carey's goal when Austin Cihak knocked in a short-handed goal near the midpoint of the second frame. The Wild kept battling and clawed to within one goal again at the 15:18 mark of the second period on Sjogren's first goal of the contest. On a 2-on-1, Sjoren scored on a one-timer from the slot on a deft pass from Max McHugh (Edgewood, Wash.) in the near faceoff circle. Brennen Parker (Villa Park, Calif.) picked up the second assist.
Chicago tacked on two goals late in the second period to take a 5-2 lead into the second break. Somma scored a power-play goal with 1:29 left in the second period before Tony Domico lit the lamp with less than a second remaining.
James Albrecht extended Chicago's lead to 6-2 at the 7:39 mark of the third period. Sjogren closed out scoring with a blocker-side blast with a little over three minutes to play on a pass from Michael Di Puma (Chicago, Ill.).
Brandon Jaeger (Champlin, Minn.) suffered the loss after giving up five goals on 17 shots in 40 minutes of work. Newly acquired goaltender Nick Kulmanovsky (Fairbanks, Alaska) made nine saves on 10 shots in the third period. Wenatchee threw 46 shots at Mason, 43 of which he turned aside to earn his first win in his first start with Chicago.
Sjogren led the Wild with two goals. Somma, Gervais and Domico each scored a goal and an assist for the Hitmen. Chicago scored two power-play goals on three chances while the Wild went 0-for-6 on the man-advantage.
The Wild (13-10-2) will try to split its series against the Hitmen Saturday night. Faceoff is slated for 7:05 p.m.
