Corpus Christi IceRays News Release
FRISCO, TX - For the second meeting in a row, the Texas Tornado used a strong offensive surge coupled with solid goaltending to shutout the Corpus Christi IceRays, 5-0, at the Dr Pepper Arena on Saturday. The Tornado's win ends a three-game losing streak and moved their record to 18-5-3 (39 points). Corpus Christi's loss halted a three-game winning streak and dropped their record to 10-12-2 (22 points).
Rock Einersen (15) put the Tornado ahead, just 1:03 into the first period, as his wrist shot from the low slot beat Pheonix Copley. It was the only tally of the period and the teams headed to the locker rooms with Texas leading Corpus Christi, 1-0. The Tornado outshot the IceRays 11-7 with both teams failing to convert on their only man advantage opportunities of the period.
Texas scored four unanswered goals in the second period to extend their lead to 5-0. J.D. Howard (11, :50), Nathan Sliwinski (4, 10:43; 5, 16:01), and Einersen (16, 11:57) each scored during the middle period as the Tornado had the majority of the chances. Corpus Christi nearly snuck on the scoreboard, but Colton Saucerman's shot from the blue line was redirected off the crossbar behind Jimmy Kruger. Texas held the shot advantage, 15-3.
Corpus Christi hit their second crossbar of the evening in the third period on a Terry Portra shorthanded opportunity, but they could not convert and fell to the Tornado, 5-0. Marco Wieser replaced Copley in net and made all 11 saves in the third period. Corpus Christi went 0-5 on the power play while Texas went 1-8 on the man advantage. Final shots were 40-18 in favor of the Tornado.
