Vermont Mountaineers News Release
LACONIA, N.H. - The Mountaineers overcame a two-run deficit to defeat the Winnipesaukee Muskrats, 4-3, at Robbie Mills Sports Complex on Saturday evening in New England Collegiate Baseball League action.
After trailing 3-1, Vermont rallied for three runs in the sixth frame to collect their seventh-straight victory and record their tenth win of the season.
The visitors wasted no time getting on the board early, as Austin Gauthier (Lorton, Va. / Hofstra University) made his way around the bases on a single, stolen base and pass ball, before Corey DiLoreto (Reading, Mass. / Northeastern University) got a sacrifice fly to bring Gauthier home for the first Mountaineer run.
The Muskrats took the lead in the fourth after a bizarre sequence of events, first with a Vicente Mendoza single that caused Chad Minato to tie the game. Michael DeMartino followed up with the second run on a wild pitch, before Drew Metzdorf got a hit that fell just short of Dondrae Bremner (Toronto, Ontario / University of Cincinnati) at third base, allowing Mendoza to come in.
The rally began immediately for the Mountaineers in the sixth, kicked off by a DiLoreto RBI to bring Matt McDermott (Little Falls, N.J. / College of William and Mary) home. In the next at-bat, Cam Climo (Billerica, Mass. / University of Massachusetts-Lowell) drilled a double off the left field wall that paved the way for Curtis Robison (Dillsburg, Pa. / Penn State University) and DiLoreto to score and take the lead.
Back-to-back lightning delays during the seventh inning caused the game to be called in the middle of the frame after the Mountaineers had tacked on five more runs in the top of the seventh, reverting the score to its original state but still giving Vermont the 4-3 victory.
Nicolas Luc (Farmingdale, N.Y. / Adelphi University) picked up the win for the Mountaineers after pitching a little over three innings, allowing four hits and three runs but striking out three Muskrats. Christopher McGrory took the loss for Winnipesaukee, allowing all four Vermont hits and runs while striking out just one Mountaineer in over five innings of play. Ryan Steckline (Newark, De. / Monmouth University) got the save, coming in during the final inning to get the last strike-out of the evening.
The win now moves the Mountaineers to the double-digit victory mark, improving their record to 10-7 overall and moving them into a tie for second place in the NECBL Northern Division with Upper Valley. The squad will return home for a three-game homestand, starting tomorrow, Jun. 30, with a 6:30 p.m. match-up against the Sanford Mainers.
