
Six Unanswered Runs Push Fielders Past 'Hammers 6-4

ZION, IL - Brian McFall delivered a two run double in the fourth, putting the Lake County Fielders (35-48) ahead for good in a 6-4 come-from-behind victory Wednesday night over the Joliet JackHammers (41-41) in Zion. Joliet took an early four run lead, but Lake County responded with six unanswered runs to earn the victory.
The Fielders loaded the bases with nobody out in the fourth against Rory Shortell (2-8). Anthony Esquer delivered a leadoff single and Kyle Higgins was hit by a pitch to put two runners on with the JackHammers leading 4-2. Guillermo Martinez laid down a bunt single to load the bases with Juan Valdes knocking in a run with a sacrifice fly. Shortell retired Amos Ramon and hit Josh Short to load the bases with two outs, with McFall doubling down the left field line to put Lake County up 5-4.
The JackHammers threatened in the ninth, getting back-to-back singles from Rafael Mendez and Roberto Mena to lead off the inning against Marco Gonzalez. The closer retired the next three hitters to preserve the 6-4 final.
Joliet put up four early runs against Alec Lewis (1-2), taking a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the third. Brad Correll slapped a ground rule double in the first and scored on a Freddie Thon single. The third baseman was back at it in the third, slugging a three run homer for a 4-0 advantage.
Lake County chipped away with two in the third. Short singled home the first run for the Fielders and the second run scored on an error by Kevin Rios at short.
Shortell went 6.1 innings in the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) on 11 hits with seven strikeouts and one walk.
Lewis earned his first win, going five innings surrendering four runs (three earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts.
Correll and Thon each had three hits with Correll knocking in a game high three runs.
The JackHammers wrapped the season series with Lake County, taking eight of the 12 games against the Fielders. Joliet will return home tomorrow night when the Kansas City T-Bones visit Silver Cross Field. Andrew Cruse (9-4) and Bear Bay (6-5) is the starting pitching matchup. First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. pre-game show on 1340 WJOL.
