Six-Run Third Inning Leads Brockton Past Torrington
June 19, 2012 - Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL)
Old Orchard Beach News Release
Torrington, Conn. - The Brockton bats exploded once again on Tuesday night, this time for six runs in the third inning, as the Rox knocked off the Torrington Titans, 7-2, at Fuessenich Park in Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL) action.
Brockton (4-6) has now won three of its last four, including two straight over the Titans.
The Rox took an early lead in the first inning after Joe Gallub (Concordia) scored on an error to make it, 1-0. Brockton then rallied for six runs in the third inning to take a commanding, 7-0, lead. Mansfield's Rhett Wiseman (Vanderbilt) spearheaded the offensive outburst with a leadoff walk. After a base knock from Gallub, Tanner Reibenspies (San Diego State) singled to load the bases. That's when another Torrington (4-4) error plated both Wiseman and Gallub to put the Rox up by three.
However, Brockton wasn't done there, as Cohasset native Rob McCunney (Fordham) and Vito Perna (Jones County J.C.) each laced back-to-back RBI singles to increase the lead to five. The Rox added two more runs to close out the frame, as an Aaron Lupia (Indiana University of Pennsylvania) sacrifice fly plated McCunney, while Wiseman singled to score Perna.
Meanwhile, Rox starter Chris Kalica (Fairfield) pitched a gem for the visitors, allowing just one run on five hits in seven innings on the hill. The right-hander struck out five and walked none en route to his first victory of the season (1-0).
The lone run surrendered by Kalica came in the seventh, when Gabe Craven (Florence-Darlington) singled to score Ryan Plourde (Fairfield), who reached earlier in the inning on a one-out double.
Torrington tacked on another run in the ninth thanks to a solo homer from Conor Bierfeldt (Western Connecticut), but the deficit proved to be too much to overcome for the hosts.
Once again, McCunney led the attack for the Rox at the dish, going 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Nick Colucci (Boston College) and Scituate native Jordan Berry (George Washington) each tallied a pair of hits, while Berry also stole his first base of the season.
Bierfeldt blasted his league-leading third homer of the season to highlight Torrington's evening at the plate, while Plourde went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
Craig LeJeune (George Washington) was stellar out of the bullpen for the Rox, striking out the side in one inning of work. On the other end, Torrington reliever Raphael Martinez (C.W. Post) conceded just one hit in three outstanding innings out of relief.
Travis Dierke (Kenyon) suffered the loss (0-1) for the Titans.
The Rox hit the road to face the North Shore Navigators on Wednesday at 7 p.m., while Torrington visits the Wachusett Dirt Dawgs at 6:35 p.m.
