MCCUNNEY'S SIX RBI POWER ROX PAST TITANS

Brockton, Mass. - Cohasset's Rob McCunney (Fordham) went 4-for-4 with a homer, six RBI, and two runs scored to lead the Brockton Rox past the Torrington Titans, 12-4, on Sunday afternoon at Campanelli Stadium.

Brockton (3-6) took an early lead in the bottom of the second after East Bridgewater's Greg Baggett (Bentley) led off the frame by reaching on an error. With Baggett on second, McCunney stepped in and ripped a single for the first of his six RBI to put the Rox up, 1-0. After Scituate's Jordan Berry (George Washington) reached on a fielder's choice, Joe Gallub (Concordia) followed with a single to put runners on first and second. That's when Hull's Jeff Cavanaro (UMass Amherst) smacked his first hit of the season into left field to score Berry and give the Rox a 2-0 lead.

After Baggett launched a two-out double into the left center field gap in the third inning, McCunney came through with another RBI single to make it a 3-0 lead.

However, Torrington (4-3) bounced back in the sixth inning, as Matt Cianci (Fordham) and Ryan Zielinski (Castleton State) scored on an RBI single from Ryan Plourde (Fairfield) to pull the Titans within a run.

An inning later, the Titans added two more runs to take a 4-3 lead. Jordan Serena (Columbia) drew a leadoff walk, stole second, and scored on a Brockton error to tie the game. Moments later, Gus Craig's (Columbia) RBI fielder's choice plated Kyle Decker (Trinity) and put the Titans on top by one.

Trailing by a run heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Rox stormed back with a two-out rally for the ages. Mike Lupia (Indiana University of Pennsylvania) spearheaded the attack with a two-out double down the left field line to keep the inning alive. After a Tanner Reibenspies (San Diego State) walk, Baggett laced an RBI single to score Lupia and knot the game at four. McCunney followed with a two-run single to score Reibenspies and Baggett, giving Brockton a lead it wouldn't surrender. The Rox weren't done there, as Gallub, Luis Gonzalez (Concordia), and Rhett Wiseman (Vanderbilt) notched RBI singles to add to the scoring barrage and eventually put Brockton on top, 10-4.

After a seven-run seventh inning, the Rox added two more in the eighth thanks to McCunney, who belted his first homer of the season off of the left field foul pole to give the hosts an eight run lead.

Aside from McCunney's monster game at the plate, the Rox were led by Baggett, who went 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI, and three runs scored. Gallub finished 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored, while Reibenspies and Berry each scored a pair of runs.

Not to be out-shadowed by the offensive heroics, Brockton's pitching was stellar all afternoon as well, scattering just four hits in the win.

Rox starter Evan Brown (Newberry) allowed just two runs on three hits in 5.1 innings of work, while walking four and striking out five. Sal Minichino (Concordia) recorded the win (1-1) in 0.2 scoreless innings of relief, while Westwood's John Sheehan (William and Mary) and Cohasset's Brendan Doonan (Rhode Island) retired the side in order in the eighth and ninth inning respectively.
