Six-run inning propels Scorpions

ST. GEORGE, Utah - Six runs in an hour-long eighth inning was enough for the Yuma Scorpions to hold off the St. George RoadRunners 6-5 Tuesday night at Bruce Hurst Field.

The win for Yuma (41-30, 20-13), coupled with Long Beach?s 4-3, extra-inning loss to the Reno Silver Sox, moves the Scorpions within four games of the Armada with five games left to play.

Jordan Prado started off the eighth with a double to left field and after Pete Farina reached on an error, Henry Calderon tied the game at 1-1 with a double off the left-field wall.

St. George starter Dan Hall was then taken out and his place reliever Shannon Sprouse gave up the lead when Maikel Jova lined his first pitch into left-center field, scoring Farina and Calderon to give Yuma the lead for good.

The Scorpions tacked on three more runs as Jova scored on a Pascual Matos single, Jose Rodriguez came in on a wild pitch and Matos scored on a Farina walk.

St. George battled back after the five-run deficit, scoring three runs in the bottom of the eighth, forcing starting pitcher Charles Merricks out of the game.

The inning lasted an hour, featured three pitching changes and nine runs scored.

The RoadRunners threatened in the ninth inning, scoring a run on a wild pitch, but Scorpions reliever Aaron Wilson struck out Marcos Villezcas swinging to end the game with winning run at first base.

Merricks (6-2) got the win, allowing eight hits, four runs (one earned) while striking out five in 7 2/3 innings. Wilson earned his first save of the season as he pitched the final 1 1/3 innings.

Hall (2-4) got the loss, allowing six hits, three runs (two earned) while striking out four in seven innings.
