Roanoke Dazzle News Release
ROANOKE, Va., September 24, 2002 â SirValiant Brown and Ryan Charles, former Virginia high schools stars who played college basketball at George Washington and Radford, respectively, were named today as allocated players for the Roanoke Dazzle by the National Basketball Development League.
Karl Hicks, Executive Director of the NBDL, named Brown and Charles among 16 players allocated to the eight NBDL clubs for the league's second season. Allocated players have regional ties to their teams, and receive berths in the training camps of the teams in the NBA's minor league.
Each team will be allocated four players, and at least one allocated player is guaranteed a spot on an NBDL team's final, 10-player roster. Point guard Derrick Hines, a Roanoke native, was a Dazzle allocated player last year and remained on the team's roster for the entire season. Hines will not count among the four allocated players for the Dazzle in 2002-03.
"It's nice to be able to add some familiar names to our roster for our second season," Dazzle Head Coach Kent Davison said. "Ryan Charles gives us an athletic big man who can run the floor and finish down on the block. We all know SirValiant Brown can score â he almost led the nation in scoring two years ago â but when he worked out here this summer, what impressed me was how he got after it defensively."
Brown, a 6-foot-1 point guard from Washington, D.C.,, nearly became the first freshman to lead NCAA Division I in scoring during the 1999-2000 season. He averaged 24.6 points for George Washington, second only to the nation's best of 24.8 by Fresno State's Courtney Alexander.
Brown, 21, led Robert E. Lee High School of Springfield, Va., to the Virginia Group AAA state semifinals in 1999. He left GW after two seasons to become an early entry candidate for the NBA Draft, but was not selected. He spent most of last season touring with the One World All-Stars, playing exhibitions against Division I and II teams on college campuses.
Charles, a 6-9 center-forward from Midlothian, Va., starred at Clover Hill High School in suburban Richmond before becoming one of the best big men in Radford University history. As a sophomore, Charles helped the Highlanders to a Big South Conference championship and their first NCAA Tournament berth.
Charles, 24, battled injury in his final two Radford seasons, still averaging 15.5 and 18.0 points per game and was a two-time All-Big South selection. He has played pro basketball in Argentina, Turkey, Belgium and Sweden since his 2000 graduation. With Jamtland in Osturlund, Sweden last season, Charles averaged 16.4 points.
