Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Brenden Olson gave the Sioux Falls Stampede an overtime victory Friday, nudging the home team past the Waterloo Black Hawks 3-2 at Sanford Premier Center.
No one picked up a breaking Olson in the neutral zone as he received the puck and sped up right wing. Cutting across the slot below the hashmarks, Olson lifted his shot over a sprawling Gabriel Carriere 96 seconds into the extra period.
It was the third transition goal of the night for Sioux Falls.
A turnover near the Waterloo blue line had led to the only goal of the first period. Stampede defenseman Evan Nause swiped a pass, springing Jared Westcott up the slot for a shot which caromed in off the crossbar at 15:54.
The Hawks answered almost exactly a period later at 16:06 of the second. Moving up the ice on a rush, Griffin Ness dodged a defender in the right circle and sent a pass across the goalmouth. Wyatt Schingoethe came flying up left wing to spike the chance past Jaxson Stauber.
Schingoethe scored again to give the Black Hawks the lead at 3:52 of the third period. Dane Montgomery bounced the puck off the kick plate to be picked up by Schingoethe at the bottom of the left circle. With Stauber caught off balance, Schingoethe hit the net from a sharp angle.
The lead lasted until 11:31, when Westscott eluded the Hawks' defense in transition to slip in an attempt from close range.
In the loss, the Hawks outshot the Stampede 43-25.
Waterloo and Sioux Falls meet for an instant rematch Saturday in South Dakota.
