Sioux City Musketeers News Release
MUSKEGON, MI - The Musketeers made a visit to to Muskegon for the first of two games against the Lumberjacks on Friday night, and skated to 4-1 victory on the back of two Dylan Mills goals and an excellent performance from Ben Kraws.
The game couldn't have started much better for Sioux City, who jumped out to a 1-0 lead under 2 minutes into the contest. Newcomer Nate Clurman won a puck battle in the Musketeer defensive zone and flipped the puck to a streaking Dylan Mills. The puck initially went past Mills, but the Muskegon defenseman seemed to give up on the play. This gave Mills plenty of room to win the puck race, negating the icing. Mills gathered the puck and was left all alone in front of the net, so he slid it past Lumberjack goaltender Keegan Karki to put the Musketeers up 1-0. Sioux City would get another big opportunity almost immediately after when a high stick on Aaron Grounds drew some blood, meaning the Musketeers would head on a 4 minute powerplay. Sioux City had a few quality chances, but weren't able convert. Sioux City would continue to apply the pressure in the period, but weren't able to extend the lead. Sioux City would head into the locker room leading 1-0.
Sioux City came out fast again in the 2nd period. Once again they were rewarded early when Micah Miller fired a blast to extend the Musketeer lead to two. Parker Ford deserves a lot of credit on the goal, as he fought off multiple Muskegon defenders and fed a pass to Miller, who then fired a bomb from a sharp angle to give Sioux City a 2-0 lead. Sioux City wasn't able to keep the Jacks off the board in the period, as they would cut the lead to one on a rebound goal by Mikael Hakkarainen. The Musketeers didn't allow Muskegon to build on their momentum, and regained their two goal lead just a minute later. Colby Bukes received a penalty shortly after the game restarted, sending the Musketeers on the powerplay. Cole Koepke put a shot on net and the rebound fell right to waiting Dylan Mills, who buried his second goal of the game to give the Musketeers a 3-1 lead. Muskegon kept battling in the period, but Musketeer goaltender Ben Kraws shut them down. The Musketeers would head into the locker room leading by two.
Sioux City continued their impressive performance in the 3rd period and manged to keep the Lumberjacks off the board. Cole Koepke added an empty net goal with just under two minutes to go in order to seal the 4-1 victory for the Musketeers.
Ben Kraws was extremely impressive in net, making huge saves all night. He stopped 29 of 30 shots fired his way to earn his second win of the year. Dylan Mills earned first star honors, after finishing the game with two goals.
The Musketeers are back in action tomorrow night for the second and final game of the weekend against the Lumberjacks. Puck drop is set for 6:15 p.m. CST. As always, you can catch the game live on HockeyTV, at Buffalo Wild Wings or on 620 KMNS.
