San Antonio Stars News Release
SAN ANTONIO - San Antonio Silver Stars guard Becky Hammon is one of four nominees for the 2008 ESPY award for Best WNBA Player. The ESPYs will air on ESPN Sunday, July 20, at 8 p.m. Central Standard Time. Voting began July 1 and runs through July 12 online at http://espn.go.com/espy2008/.
The nomination falls on the heels of a career season for the veteran guard as she guided the Silver Stars to their first playoff run since the franchise moved to San Antonio, finishing second in the 2007 WNBA MVP race. The 2007 San Antonio Express-News Sportswoman of the Year, Hammon also earned a starting nod to the WNBA All-Star game and was a first-team all-WNBA selection after leading the league in assists and ranking fifth in scoring at 18.8 points per game. While at WNBA All-Star weekend, Hammon claimed the skills challenge title, winning the annual Dribble, Dish and Swish contest. In February, she teamed with Tim Duncan and David Robinson to take home the Haier Shooting Stars trophy at NBA All-Star.
Hammon, one of the most popular players in the WNBA, is currently averaging 15.1 points and 4.9 assists per game for the Silver Stars. Joining Hammon on the list of nominees are Seattle forward Lauren Jackson, Phoenix guard Diana Taurasi and Minnesota guard Seimone Augustus.
