San Antonio Stars News Release
SAN ANTONIO â San Antonio Silver Stars Chief Operating Officer Clarissa Davis-Wrightsil announced today the Silver Stars 2005 regular season roster. At the same time the Silver Stars released Keisha Anderson, Adrian Williams and Lindsey Yamasaki to get their roster down to 13 players, 11 active and two on injured reserve. Yamasaki will remain in San Antonio to rehab her torn right Achilles tendon she suffered midway through training camp.
San Antonio also placed Tai Dillard and Dalma Ivanyi on the injured list, and placed Chen Nan on the suspended list. Dillard will miss the start of the season with a right hamstring strain and Ivanyi is out with bilateral patella tendonitis.
San Antonio's roster includes four returning players from the 2004 Silver Stars team and nine new faces. Dillard, Marie Ferdinand, Shannon Johnson and LaToya Thomas make up the four returnees. Ferdinand is the only player on the roster from the Utah Starzz team that made the move to San Antonio.
Newcomers to the Silver Stars this year include six WNBA veterans. San Antonio recently acquired Chantelle Anderson in a trade with the Sacramento Monarchs. The Silver Stars were able to sign six-year WNBA veteran Edna Campbell and Ivanyi who played two seasons with the Utah Starzz (1999, 2000). In addition, to Campbell and Ivanyi, San Antonio added two decorated WNBA veterans in Nikki McCray and Wendy Palmer-Daniel. The Silver Stars rounded out their offseason moves by signing Bernadette Ngoyisa, a 6'4" center who played with the New York Liberty in 2002.
The Silver Stars used the 2005 WNBA Draft to complete their roster. San Antonio used its first pick (fourth overall) to select Kendra Wecker out of Kansas State University. With the first pick in the second round (14th overall) the Silver Stars took Shyra Ely from the University of Tennessee. San Antonio also pulled off a draft day trade with Connecticut to gain the services of Katie Feenstra, this year's eighth overall pick.
Keisha Anderson was signed by the Silver Stars as a free agent on April 14. She appeared in one preseason game with San Antonio. Williams spent the second half of the 2004 season with the Silver Stars after being picked up in a trade with Phoenix on July 19, 2004. She appeared in 12 games in a Silver Stars uniform. Yamasaki joined San Antonio as a free agent on April 14. She did not see any preseason action due to her Achilles injury.
San Antonio opens the 2005 regular season at the SBC Center on Saturday, May 21 at 7:00 p.m. when Sheryl Swoopes and the Houston Comets come to town. The first 5,000 fans through the doors will receive a Silver Stars Schedule Poster courtesy of H.E.B. There will be face painters, clowns and a balloon artist on hand to entertain the kids.
