
Monarchs announce 2005 roster

First Regular Season Game on Saturday, May 21, at Phoenix
SACRAMENTO, CALIF., MAY 20, 2005 - The Sacramento Monarchs today announce the roster for the 2005 WNBA regular season. New additions to the team include: two free agents from China, Miao Lijie and Sui Feifei; Erin Buescher, Nicole Powell and Olympia Scott-Richardson, acquired in a trade with the Charlotte Sting for Tangela Smith; and rookies, Kristin Haynie, selected by Sacramento in the first round (ninth overall) and Chelsea Newton, the Monarchs second round draft pick (22nd overall).
Returning to Sacramento for another season are four-time WNBA All-Star selections, Yolanda Griffith and Ticha Penicheiro, the Monarchs 2004 first round draft pick (10th overall), Rebekkah Brunson, 2003 WNBA First Round Draft Pick (fifth overall) Kara Lawson, Sacramento's 2002 First Round Draft Pick (12th overall), Hamchétou Maïga and the Monarchs fifth overall pick the 2003 WNBA Dispersal Draft, DeMya Walker.
With the roster more than half full of new, young faces, the Monarchs now have an average age of 25.7 years old compared to their 28 years old average from last seasons roster. The 2005 Monarchs team also shows increased international flavor with the additions of Sui and Miao along with returning veterans Penicheiro (Portugal) and Maïga (Mali). Currently listed on injured reserve for the Monarchs are Scott-Richardson, with a left thigh contusion and Sui, with a left knee contusion/sprain.
The first of seventeen regular-season home games will be played on Saturday, June 4, at ARCO Arena when the Monarchs host the Los Angeles Sparks at 1:00 p.m. in a game to be nationally televised on ABC. Sacramento's regular season will begin on the road on Saturday, May 21, at the Phoenix Mercury at 7:00 p.m. at America West Arena.
