Indianapolis Ice News Release

INDIANAPOLIS, IN-- The Indianapolis Ice announced today that the team has released all-star goaltender Shawn Silver so he can attend school this fall at the University of Toronto.

Silver, who originally signed for the coming year back in July, was accepted into a masters program in Physiotherapy at the University of Toronto. The program is a 23-month session that begins in September.

"Obviously when I signed, I didn't think there was a chance that I would be accepted," said Silver. "It is a tough program to get into and there is no guarantee that I would be able to get in again. "It's a decision which affects my future career and an opportunity that I could not pass up.

The 27-year-old Silver was an award-winning machine in his North American pro debut with the Ice last season. He finished the year with a 29-12-4 record to go along with a 2.21 goals-against-average, six shutouts and a .919 save percentage. His GAA and shutout totals were second best in the CHL, while he finished third overall in wins. Yearly honors included an all-star appearance, two CHL Goaltender of the Month awards and five CHL Goaltender of the Week selections.

"It will be a tough task to replace a goaltender of Shawn's caliber," said Ice Head Coach Ken McRae. "It's a career move for him and we wish him the best and thank him for the memorable season last year.

Silver's season to remember included several record shatterings. He set the new CHL and all-time Ice record for consecutive scoreless minutes by not allowing a goal in 222:01 during a stretch from late November to early December. Other Ice gems included a franchise-best ten game winning streak and the new single season benchmark for GAA (2.21) and shutouts (6).

"I want to thank everyone from the Ice organization to all the loyal fans for their support last season," added Silver. "It was a year I will always remember and I will definitely be following the progress of all my friends in Indy.

In other news, the Ice announced the signings of goaltender Brent Zelenewich and forwards Adam Redmond and Brian Yingling to contracts, while inking forward Allan Carr and defenseman Shawn Smith to training camp try-outs.

Zelenewich, 24, has been a winner throughout his career in collegiate hockey and in juniors. He was the starting netminder the last three seasons for the St. Mary's University Huskies (Canada) and was the playoff M.V.P. during the 1999-00 season as a member of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) Champion Fort McMurray Oil Barons after posting a 12-1 record and a goals-against-average mark of 1.98 (2nd best in league history).

Redmond, 24, was a four-year stalwart for the University of New Brunswick (Canada) Reds where he compiled 73 points (33G, 40A) in 101 career games. Yingling, 25, arrives after an incredible four-year run with the Lebanon Valley College Flying Dutchmen (ECAC Northeast-NCAA Division III). The talented forward leaves the program as the owner of practically every offensive record and is the school's all-time leading scorer with a whopping 210 points (111G, 99A).

Carr, 26, returns to hockey after a two-year hiatus and most recently put up three good years with the University of Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks (CCHA- NCAA Division I), including a 31-point output in 1999-00. Smith joins the Ice blueline after playing three years collegiately with the Augsburg College Auggies (MIAC- NCAA Division III) where he posted 32 points (5G, 27A) and a (+17) plus/minus in 83 career games.

Season tickets are on sale now and can be purchased by calling (317) 925-4423. For all the latest Ice information, please visit www.indianapolisice.com.
