Syracuse Silver Knights News Release
SYRACUSE, New York - The Syracuse Silver Knights (9-7, Eastern Division #2) rode the wave in Milwaukee and came out victorious. The Silver Knights took the overtime thriller 10-9 over the Milwaukee Wave (12-6, Central Division #2) after Nelson Santana's free kick goal in overtime.
New comer Jade Mesias, who was signed just this past week after leaving Harrisburg, opened the scoring for the Silver Knights on a power play goal in the first quarter. The former Heat player would provide a spark the whole game and provided a big impact on the offensive end of the field during the match.
After a rebound goal by Wave new comer Corey Anderson midway through the first quarter, the Knights were able to respond thanks to Kenardo Forbes. Forbes took over at the end of the first quarter by scoring and assisting on another goal late in the first the give Silver Knights the lead 3-2 at the end of the first.
The second quarter saw much less offense from each side with most of the possession by each team at midfield. Little action was seen until Ian Bennett and Tony Walls scored back to back to back goals late In the second to give the Wave a 4-3 lead. But the Knights would respond before the halftime whistle sounded thanks to a Kenardo Forbes assist once again, this time to the right foot of Bo Jelovac tying things up at 4 before the half.
The second half saw as much action as any quarter has for both sides, starting with a Cory Elenio breakaway goal just 4 minutes into the third. That would start an avalanche of goals for each side.
The goal scoring got started when Tony Walls received the team's third yellow card, leading to a red card for himself and an ejection, along with a blue card for the team. That put the Wave down two players for two minutes and the Knights took advantage. The Knights would go on to score two goals in that time period coming off the feet from Neto and Nelson Santana.
The Silver Knights would end up scoring 4 goals in the quarter while the Wave also put up 2 of their own.
Going into the fourth quarter the Silver Knights lead 8-6 and were looking to hold on and clinch their second straight playoff spot.
But the Wave had other plans for the visitors. The Milwaukee Wave scored three straight goals to take the lead 9-8 for the first time since it was 4-3 late in the second quarter.
Kenardo Forbes was able to play hero once again for the Silver Knights scoring with under 3 minutes left in the fourth off of a rebound shot from Bo Jelovac to tie things up once again. The last 3 minutes of the match saw little action and no opportunities for either side.
The Silver Knights and Wave went to overtime locked at 9 each. The Silver Knights knew they needed the win in order to make playoffs and were ready to take advantage.
The Silver Knights got their chance as Nelson Santana stood over the ball looking to strike with a perfect free kick opportunity. Santana was able to bend his shot over the wall into the upper right hand corner of the goal for the game winner.
The bench was cleared as the team dogged piled on Santana. The goal gave the Silver Knights a huge road victory and sent the Silver Knights to the playoffs once again.
