Syracuse Silver Knights News Release

The Syracuse Silver Knights suffered a last-minute heartbreaker in front of 3,162 at the War Memorial at Oncenter on Saturday night. The Silver Knights fell to a 6-10 record with the 12-10 loss to in-state rival Rochester.

The physical first half featured a display of defensive willpower, goalkeeping prowess, and high emotions. Andriy Budnyy scored the only goals of the first half with one in each quarter, giving the Silver Knights the lead going into halftime.

The Lancers scored early in the second half to pull within two points, but Syracuse leading scorer Jeff Hughes added the first of his two goals three minutes later. Rochester netted two more goals of their own, but Syracuse maintained and added to their lead with goals by Budnyy and Hughes.

The two goals by Hughes and Budnyy's hat trick were the offensive high points for the Silver Knights in their quest for the playoffs. Two more goals by Rochester left the game tied with just over three minutes remaining in regulation.

Syracuse held possession to start overtime, but Nelson Santana was penalized for tripping, giving Rochester a critical power play. Ljubomir Kocic netted the winner for the Lancers less than a minute later to give Rochester the win and the one-game lead for the Eastern Division's second playoff berth.

The Silver Knights hit the road for two games this week in search of a win. They face off against Missouri on Wednesday, January 25; then they head to face league-leader Milwaukee in a rematch of a tight contest earlier this month.
