Comets Take Down Sharx
January 21, 2012 - Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL)
Kansas City Comets News Release
(Norfolk, VA) The Comets are deep in a playoff race and every game is a must-win down the stretch. That being said, you could understand if the Comets were looking past their opponent tonight, especially since 4 of their remaining 6 games are against powerhouse teams Baltimore and Milwaukee. It wasn't always pretty tonight, but the Comets were able to come away with a win 14-6 over the Norfolk SharX. Newly signed Bato Radoncic made his presence known with two goals and MISL points leader Geison chipped in with two goals of his own.
Both teams came into this game off of disappointing performances, the Comets losing a heartbreaker to the Wings last week and the SharX losing big to Baltimore last night. The Comets looked like they were ready to end their losing ways though and controlled play throughout the 1st quarter. Bato Radoncic started the scoring 4 minutes into the game for his first goal of the season. Little used Tennant McVea took advantage of a missed clearance attempt from defender Leo Gibson and tied the game for the SharX, but Geison found the back of the net with 21 seconds left to give the Comets a 4-2 lead at the end of the quarter.
Norfolk goalkeeper Jamie Lieberman is the current MISL Player of the Week and the 2nd quarter was a great example of why. The Comets peppered him with shot after shot and dominated time of possession throughout the quarter. The only goal of the quarter however was off a set play as Ryan Junge scored his 8th goal of the season. At the half Comets still led 6-2.
The Norfolk SharX knew that if they were going to have a chance they would need to have a perfect 2nd half. Gary Brooks took that to heart and scored 44 seconds into the half to get the SharX within two. Tiguinho took advantage of another restart opportunity as he took the feed from Vahid Assadpour and scored his first goal of the night. The SharX wouldn't give up though and Matt Clare put a perfectly placed far post upper 90 shot a minute later. That brought the score to an 8-6 Comets lead that held until the end of the 3rd quarter.
As the 4th quarter started it seemed the Comets were tired of playing down to the level of their opponent and they came out with a single mission. Win this game and go home. Radoncic scored 3 minutes into quarter for his second of the night, validating his late-season signing. Geison put away his second goal of the night with just over a minute remaining. On the ensuing kickoff Brian Harris intercepted the initial pass and took it all the way down the field for the proverbial 'nail-in-the-coffin' goal. On the strong 4th quarter the Comets pulled away for the 14-6 win.
The Comets are back at home in the Independence Events Center this Wednesday, January 25th to take on the Syracuse Silver Knights. The first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive a Gino Schiraldi bobblehead courtesy of Citizens Bank & Trust. For tickets and information call (816) 478-2255.
