Syracuse Silver Knights News Release
SYRACUSE, New York - The Syracuse Silver Knights (12-8, #2 in Eastern Division) knocked off the Detroit Waza Flo (4-16, #4 in Eastern Division) 17-7 in the OnCenter War Memorial.
Cory Elenio opened the scoring with a beauty for the Orange, Silver and Black with five minutes to go in the first period. The forward gathered a Detroit misplaced pass at the halfway line and chipped Waza keeper Trent Messick putting Syracuse up 3-0.
In the second quarter Kenardo Forbes added to Syracuse's lead. The Jamaican received a pass from Neto on the left side of goal and placed his closed-range shot above Messick making the score 5-0 in favor of the Knights.
Early in the second half Marcos Chantel put the Knights up 7-0. A Detroit defender poked in a cross from point blank range, but Chantel gets credit for it since he was the closest attacker.
A second Waza own goal minutes later made the score 9-0 Syracuse. Bo Jelovac received credit for this one, but once again a deflected cross hit a Detroit defender resulting in the own goal.
Just seconds later Waza attacker Daniel Martini Mattos' shot trickled passed Bryan O'Quinn putting Detroit on the board. Mattos was left alone in front of goal and scored right underneath a diving O'Quinn. This made the score 9-2.
At the 4:50 mark Waza struck again. Costea Decu had his initial shot saved by O'Quinn, but then put in his rebound inside of the box on the left making the score 9-7 Syracuse.
SSK finally responded through Antonio Manfut at the end of the third. The midfielder received a pass just inside the arc on the right and ripped his shot passed Messick putting the 'Cuse back up four, 11-7.
Early in the fourth Mario Swaby was fouled just outside of the box and the Knights were given a close range free kick. Slav Ubiparipovic stepped up for the Orange, Silver and Black and smashed his shot into the top right corner putting Syracuse up 13-7.
With six minutes to play Forbes scored his second goal of the day to put the game out of reach. The forward ripped a shot just inside the arc on the right side making the score 15-7 in favor of Syracuse.
A minute later Manfut played a lightly weighted first time cross from the right to Nate Bourdeau who headed home the Knights eighth goal of the day. Bourdeau's first goal on the afternoon made the score 17-7.
After the game Coach Tanner said: "You don't want to go into the playoffs losing two in a row at home...You don't want to lose any at home."
He went on talk about the upcoming playoff matchup with Rochester: "Hopefully Nelson Santana is going to be okay for [the game.] We can't lose it on Thursday night and we can't win it on Thursday night."
SSK is playoff bound! The team will take on the Rochester Lancers in a Best of 3 Series. The first game is on Thursday March 5 th at 7pm at the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester. The return leg of the Thruway Rivalry will be held on March 8 th at 4pm at the War Memorial. If the two split the first two meetings, a 15-minute mini-match will be played after the conclusion of Game 2.
