Sierra's Blast Lifts Fayetteville over Winston-Salem

Another strikeout-laden outing from Shawn Dubin was complimented by Miguelangel Sierra's 11th home run of the season on Friday night, as the Fayetteville Woodpeckers took down the Winston-Salem Dash to open a three-game series at BB&T Ballpark. Fayetteville scattered runs across three innings in the 6-2 winner. With the win and a Myrtle Beach loss, Fayetteville retakes sole possession of second place in the Carolina League South Division.

After logging 20 strikeouts over his last 9 2/3 innings, Shawn Dubin held a similar pace to start his evening in Wisnton-Salem. Dubin held the Dash quiet over the first two frames, but he allowed a pair of runs on a trio of hits in the third inning. While he did surrender a short lead in the frame, Dubin (W, 3-4) struck out five over hist first three innings, and eight total over five innings, limiting Winston-Salem to the two runs. Over his last three starts, Dubin has struck out 28 batters in just 14 2/3 innings. Fayetteville used a pair of arms in relief in Humberto Castellanos and Nivaldo Rodriguez (S, 1) to hold the Dash to only one hit over the final four innings.

Offensively, the Woodpeckers waited until the second inning to pounce on Winston-Salem starter Konnor Pilkington, when Chandler Taylor opened the frame with a grounds rule double to right field. Following a quick strikeout, Ross Adolph slapped a double into the left field corner to drive in Taylor to open the scoring. After Dubin relinquished the slim lead, Fayetteville got back in the fifth inning against Pilkington. (L, 3-9) Scott Schreiber opened the frame by reaching on an error at shortstop, and following a Ruben Castro walk, Miguelangel Sierra floated a three-run home run over the left field wall to put Fayetteville up for good. After a trio of scoreless frames from two relievers from the Dash, Fayetteville went back on the offensive in their final inning. Continuing their season-long assault of Dash reliever Jose Nin, Fayetteville drew a pair of walks and worked an infield single to quickly load the bases. With inly one out, Cal Stevenson bounced a ball off the ankle of Nin to score a pair of runs, finally ending the night for Fayetteville.

With the win, Fayetteville moves back to .500 within their own division for the first time since the beginning of the season. Fayetteville will have an opportunity to win the three-game series when they play the second game of the set on Saturday. Cody Deason will climb the hill for Fayetteville, with the first pitch scheduled in Winston-Salem for 6:00PM.
