Sidewinders Win Home Opener 12-10 Against Sky Sox

Tucson, AZ - The Sidewinders scored 12 runs on 12 hits to best the Colorado Springs Sky Sox 12-10 in support of rehabbing Arizona Diamondback Randy Johnson. Johnson pitched a total of 4.0 innings, giving up 8 hits, 5 earned runs, two walks and striking out only one batter. His threw 78 pitches and 53 of them where for strikes.

The Sky Sox got two early runs in the first inning against Johnson due to a double by Seth Smith bringing in Cory Sullivan. Ian Stewart followed with another run scoring double, which plated Smith.

Sidewinders answered back in the bottom of the first with seven runs of their own thanks in part to doubles by Donnie Kelly and Trot Nixon. Randy Johnson drove in the seventh run of the inning with an RBI single up the middle.

The Sky Sox cut the lead to 7-5 in the second and tied the game with tallies in the fifth and sixth. Connor Robertson came in for the Sidewinders in the top of the seventh and struck out all three batters he faced.

Nixon delivered his second double of the game to lead off the bottom of the 7th, followed by a Josh Whitesell single and Jamie D'Antona double to give the Sidewinders a lead they would not relinquish.

Tucson righthander Jailen Peguero allowed one run in the top of the ninth but held the lead to notch his first save of the season and cap off a 12-10 Sidewinders victory.

Tucson finds themselves in sole possession of first place after the first night of play, with all three PCL Pacific Southern Division rivals losing on Thursday. The Sidewinders will be back at Tucson Electric Park on Friday night for the second game of the eight game homestand against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox. RHP Billy Buckner (0-0, 0.00) is scheduled to start for Tucson. Left-hander John Koronka (0-0, 0.00) will start for the Sky Sox. First pitch is at 6:30. The game will air live on COOL 1450 AM beginning at 6:15.
