Tucson Sidewinders News Release
Las Vegas, NV - Donnie Kelly's RBI double in the top of the 10th inning scored Evan MacLane with the eventual winning run as the Sidewinders beat Las Vegas 14-13 on Friday night at Cashman Field.
Tucson took an early 7-0 lead only to see Las Vegas rally and tie the game before the two teams exchanged scores over the final six innings. After Vegas tied the game with a run in the bottom of the fourth, the Sidewinders took an 8-7 lead in the top of the fifth before the 51's plated two in the bottom of the inning to claim a 9-8 lead. The Sidewinders went back ahead with two in the sixth but Mike Koplove's three run, inside the park home run gave Las Vegas a 12-10 lead going to the seventh. Trent Oeltjen drilled a two run home run to right-center to tie the game at 12 in the top of the seventh and each team scored in the ninth before Kelly's double put the Sidewinders up for good.
Connor Robertson worked his way out of trouble in the 10th to record his first save of the season. Robertson allowed a leadoff single to Rene Rivera and after a sacrifice bunt and a walk put runners at the corners with one out, Robertson struck out Jason Repko on a 3-2 pitch and A.J. Ellis was caught stealing to end the game.
The Sidewinders scored five runs before an out had been recorded in the game. Oeltjen and Jamie D'Antona had RBI hits and Josh Whitesell drilled a three run home run in the first inning as the first six Sidewinders reached base. D'Antona and Robby Hammock added run scoring hits in the second to give Tucson an early 7-0 lead.
Esmerling Vasquez started for the Sidewinders but couldn't make it through three innings. He allowed six runs on six hits in two and a third innings.
Leo Rosales earned the win despite allowing the tying run to score in the ninth on a bases loaded wild pitch. Rosales (1-1) gave up a run on a hit and three walks in two innings.
The Sidewinders and 51's play game three of their series on Saturday night at Cashman Field. Right-hander Juan Gutierrez (1-9, 6.38) starts for Tucson against right-hander Jason Johnson (7-3, 4.45) for Las Vegas. First pitch is at 7:05. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 6:55.
