Tucson Sidewinders News Release

Las Vegas, NV - The Sidewinders pounded out 17 runs on 26 hits and beat the Las Vegas 51's 17-12 on Thursday night at Cashman Field. The win keeps the Sidewinders four games back with 11 to play.

Robby Hammock had five hits and drove in five runs and Jamie D'Antona and Alex Romero had three RBI each to lead the Sidewinders biggest offensive output of the season. The 26 hits is a new Sidewinders season high and the most since Tucson had 28 hits in a 28-5 win at Salt Lake last year. The 17 runs ties the most tallies the Sidewinders have posted in 2007.

The two teams mirrored each other for the first five innings. Each team scored three in the first, one in the third, four in the fourth and one in the fifth for a 9-9 deadlock. Vegas scored twice in the sixth to go up 11-9 but the Sidewinders answered with seven in the seventh to take the lead for good.

Mike Schultz was credited with the win after working two innings in relief. He allowed three runs on four hits. Casey Daigle started and lasted just four innings. Daigle gave up eight runs on 11 hits.

Tucson sent nine men to the plate before an out was recorded in the seven run seventh. Alex Romero had an infield RBI single to bring the Sidewinders within one and Carlos Quentin was hit by a pitch to force in the tying run. Jamie D'Antona batted next and was also hit by a pitch to score the go-ahead run before Hammock and Ronnie Merrill drilled two run doubles.

The Sidewinders and 51's play game three of their series on Friday night at Cashman Field. Left-hander Dana Eveland (1-0, 1.99) starts for Tucson against right-hander Miguel Pinango (8-7, 4.31) for Las Vegas. First pitch is at 7:11. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 6:55.
