Sidewinder Drop Series Opener 6-3

Tucson, AZ - The Tucson Sidewinders scored just 3 runs on 11 hits while stranding 11 in their 6-3 loss to the Tacoma Rainiers Thursday. Tucson fell victim to a pair of long balls by Tacoma accounting for the three run deficit on a night with winds gusting out to rightfield.

The Sidewinders attack was led by Trot Nixon, Jamie D'Antona and Josh Whitesell, who accounted for 8 of the team's 11 knocks. Nixon belted his second bomb of the year, a solo shot, to right in the 2nd inning and added an RBI double in the 6th. Whitesell and D'Antona had three hits apiece.

Catcher Jeff Clement had the big blast for Tacoma in the 3rd. With two runners on and the score tied 1-1, Clement took a 3-2 pitch from Sidewinders starter Billy Buckner over the bullpen in right for a 3-run shot.

Buckner took the loss by allowing 6 runs, 5 earned, on 10 hits while striking out 4. He fell to 0-2 on the season with the defeat. Sidewinder pitchers did not issue a walk in the contest.

Starter Sean White was the winner for the Rainers, throwing 5 1/3 innings of 2-run ball before exiting the game after being struck by a lining off of Whitesell in the 6th. The win was White's first decision of the season.

The Sidewinders and Rainiers will play game two of the four game set at Tucson Electric Park on Friday at 6:30 p.m. Righty Juan Gutierrez (0-3, 3.86) is slated to take the mound for Tucson opposing Tacoma LHP Ryan Feierabend (3-1, 1.80) The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 6:15 p.m.
