November 20, 2010 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
Owen Sound, ON- Justin Shugg ended an uncharacteristic seven game scoring drought with two goals to lead the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors past the Owen Sound Attack 4-2 tonight at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre. Mississauga now improve to 19-2-0-1 on the season.
Both teams have been off to impressive starts this season and both are currently ranked in the BMO CHL MasterCard Top 10 rankings, the Majors occupy first while Owen Sound were sitting in seventh coming into tonight's contest. The game was full of penalties from both sides with 23 being the final tally between the clubs. The Majors scored two of their goals on the man advantage, while successfully killing off all ten Attack power plays. Mississauga raced out to a comfortable lead in the first period and never looked back. Mika Partanen got things started for the Majors at 4:15 after driving to the net and beating Attack goaltender Scott Stajcer with a backhander for his fifth goal of the season assisted by Justin Shugg to make it 1-0. The Majors power play unit picked up their first of two goals at 9:13 when Marc Cantin's blast from the point beat Stajcer over his glove side to make it 2-0. The Majors added their second power play marker at 15:10 of the first period when Justin Shugg beat Stajcer with a low driving slap shot. Shugg scored his second of the game and thirteenth of the season just over three minutes later after picking up the rebound and beating Stajcer to put the Majors ahead 4-0. The Attack pulled to within three after Andrew Fritsch scored on the rebound and beat JP Anderson up high to make it 4-1 after the first period.
The Majors went on cruise control and closed the final two periods with effective penalty killing and were never in doubt of letting up the lead. Fritsch did score his second of the game in the closing seconds of the third period to make it 4-2 but that's as close as this one would go. JP Anderson stopped 26 of the 28 shots he faced to earn his fourteenth victory of the season. Scott Stajcer and Jordan Binnington combined for 26 saves, Stajcer takes the loss for Owen Sound.
The Majors will return home to host the Peterborough Petes tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m at the Hershey Centre. 2011 MasterCard Memorial Cup ticket packages are on sale now, be part of the action. Call the Majors office at (905) 502-7788 x.1 to purchase your package.
