March 28, 2014 - Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release
Three Things You Need to Know
1.) Missouri Crowned Champs- It took Missouri 63 games, but they finally clinched the Bud Poile Governors' Cup (given to the regular season champions). This is Missouri's first ever Governors' Cup and they accomplished this outstanding achievement on Tuesday in an 8-0 win over the St. Charles Chill. Goalie Erno Suomalainen stopped all 21 shots he faced earning his first pro shutout. Sebastien Thinel, team captain and 2013-2014 CHL MVP finalist, had the game-winning goal for the Mavs giving him a half dozen game winning goals on the season. Missouri closes out the regular season with a pair of games at home against Tulsa (Friday/Saturday) and then the season finale in Quad City on Sunday.
2.) Blurry Picture- Heading into the last weekend of regular season games, the 2014 playoff picture still has not been clearly set. Arizona, Tulsa, Brampton, and Quad City are all jockeying for a spot between 5th and 8th place in the league standings. Quad City currently sits in 5th place with 70 points, meanwhile Tulsa (6th place), Brampton (7th place), and Arizona (8th place) all have 67 points apiece. This means that we still do not have any first round match ups set as of yet and will make for a very interesting and hard fought ending of the regular season. The Sundogs are at home for a pair of games against Wichita, the Beast continue their series with Rapid City with two more games remaining and the Oilers are at Missouri on Friday and Saturday before ending the busy weekend with their home finale against Denver.
3.) Scoring Machine- Sebastien Thinel is closing in on yet another CHL All-Time Record. The St. Jerome, Quebec, native is only two goals shy of tying Paul Jackson for fourth place on the CHL all-time goals list. Thinel has 310 career CHL goals 23 so far this season) and he has three games remaining to try and tie or pass Jackson. On the slate is a pair against Tulsa and one against Quad City and so far this season, Thinel has managed to score twice in seven games against the Oilers and once in nine games against the Mallards.
By the Numbers
66: The number of points it took in order to make the 2013-2014 post-season. The race to see which 8 CHL teams would make the playoffs took up until the second last weekend of games to decide who will be going to the dance this season. The eight teams that will be fighting to become this year's Ray Miron Presidents' Cup Champions are: Allen, Arizona, Brampton, Denver, Missouri, Quad City, Rapid City, and Tulsa. The playoffs will begin on Wednesday, April 2 with the beginning of the Opening Round.
One-Timers
-The All-CHL Team was announced on Monday, featuring Denver's Garett Bembridge and Troy Schwab. Also named to the team was forward Ben Gordon from Tulsa and on defense, Allen's Tyler Ludwig and Missouri's Matt Stephenson. Finally in net, Missouri's goaltender Shane Owen earned the spot.
-Brampton and Rapid City close out their regular season against each other, playing 5 straight games. This is also a possible first round match up in the 2014 CHL playoffs meaning that a series that goes the distance could see the Rush and Beast square off 12 straight times. So far this season, the Rush lead the season series 5-0 including a win on Thursday night in Brampton (4-3).
-St. Charles has had their share of injury troubles this season with 53 total players spending time on their roster this season, the highest of any of the 10 CHL clubs. The fewest is Quad City and Missouri who each have had just 27 players on their rosters this season.
- The CHL All-Rookie Team was also announced on Monday. The team features forwards Vincent Arseneau (Denver), Alex Lavoie (Allen), and Adam Pleskach (Tulsa). On defense, Lee Moffie (Denver) and Henrik Odegaard (Missouri) were named to the squad and Ty Rimmer of Quad City was selected as goalie.
-Sundog's Andrew Engelage and Tulsa's Shane Madolora both have 28 wins on the season and with two more wins can join Missouri's Shane Owen and Rapid City's Tim Boron as the only goalies in the league to have 30 or more wins on the season.
-CHL-TV, powered by America ONE Sports, is back for a second season with monthly and season packages available as well as all games on a given night available for $8.00. Visit www.americaonesports.com for ordering information.
