Denver Spoils the Party 3-2, as Cutthroats Lock up Second Place

Allen, Texas - The Allen Americans began their last regular season home series on Friday night against the Denver Cutthroats at the Allen Event Center. Allen, in need of two wins this weekend to take second place, fell to the Cutthroats 3-2 in regulation.

The Americans opened up the scoring when Oakley's Player of the Week, Spencer Asuchak, lit the lamp at the 17:17 mark of the first frame. The goal, his 21st of the season, was assisted by Darryl Bootland and Daniel Tetrault.

The Cutthroats tied the game at one, 38 seconds later, when Garrett Bembridge found the back of the net. The goal, his 41st of the season, was assisted by AJ Gale and Troy Schwab. Both teams headed into the first intermission tied 1-1 but Allen held a considerable edge on shots 14-4.

Denver took a 2-1 lead at the 10:39 mark of the second period. Cutthroat forward Cam Reid backhanded one past Bryan Pitton to give Denver a 2-1 lead, Daniel Amesbury and Daniel Barczuk with the helpers. Allen tied it up at 2, when Greger Hanson fired a shot past Cutthroat goalie, Kent Patterson, with 1:04 remaining in the second frame. The goal, a power play goal, was assisted by Jamie Schaafsma and Tyler Ludwig. Allen headed into the second intermission holding an 18-14 lead on shots.

The Cutthroats netted the game winner at the 16:24 mark of the last frame, when Vincent Arseneau slid the puck in, assisted by Steve Kaunisto.The only goal of the final period.

"We shot the puck enough to win the game tonight," said Americans Head Coach Steve Martinson, however their goaltender was the difference. Patterson made all the big saves he needed to make."

The Americans and Rapid City are tied for third place with 81 points, however the Americans still hold the first tie breaker which is wins in regulation.

With the loss, the Americans fall to 38-22-5 and the Cutthroats improve the 37-16-11. Denver wraps up the second seed in the standings and the two teams will play again Saturday night, with puck drop scheduled at 7:05pm.
