March 26, 2012 - Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release

Top Three

1.) Playoffs Set- The eight teams that will battle in the Ray Miron Presidents' Cup playoffs have been determined with the Wichita Thunder, Allen Americans, Texas Brahmas and Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees battling in the Berry Conference and the Fort Wayne Komets, Evansville IceMen, Missouri Mavericks and Rapid City Rush in the Turner Conference. The post-season begins on Wednesday night with Game 1 of the IceMen/Mavericks series with the other three series' beginning on Friday night (Thunder/Killer Bees, Americans/Brahmas and Komets/Rush). All four Opening Round series' will be best-of-7 clashes and all games can be seen LIVE on CHL-TV!

2.) March to the End- The last month of the regular season saw a couple teams streak into the post-season with the Missouri Mavericks winning each of their last four games (six straight at home) and the Allen Americans winning each of their last three contests to lead the point totals for the month of March. Allen led all teams with 20 points (10-4-0) and the Mavericks finished one point behind them with 19 (9-2-1), despite playing two fewer games. The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees finished with an impressive 9-2-0 mark (18 points) followed by a pair of clubs with 16 points each (Quad City and Rapid City). The teams that struggled the most in March were the Arizona Sundogs (3-8-0, six points) and three teams who finished with eight points (Evansville, Laredo and Texas), two of those head to the playoffs not firing on all cylinders (IceMen and Brahmas).

3.) Head-to-Head Comparisons- If you examine the four playoff match-ups and compare them to the regular season, things seem a bit lopsided. All four series' have a one-sided advantage in the head-to-head match-ups with the Allen Americans/Texas Brahmas series having the largest sampling. Allen beat the Brahmas seven times in 11 games going 7-2-2 versus Texas. The other Berry Conference showdown sees the Bud Poile Governors' Cup Champion Wichita Thunder hold a perfect 3-0 record against the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees and the two Turner series' see Fort Wayne holding a 4-1-0 season series advantage over the Rapid City Rush and the Missouri Mavericks owning a 4-1-1 mark against the Evansville IceMen.

Inside the Numbers

92- The number of points that Evansville's Todd Robinson finished with winning the Joe Burton Scoring Championship. Robinson finished with 23 goals and 69 assists beating out Quad City's Brandon Marino who finished with 90 points (41-49=90). Rounding out the top five is Rapid City's Konrad Reeder and Missouri's Sebastien Thinel, each finished with 82 points and Rapid City's Shawn Limpright (81 points). Reeder and Limpright combined to form the highest scoring duo in the league with 163 points (65-98=163).

On the Fly

-On Monday, Quad City Mallards forward Brandon Marino was named the CHL Most Valuable Player beating out fellow finalists Shawn Limpright (RPD), Bruce Graham (ALN), Todd Robinson (EVA) and Matt Robinson (WIC). Marino earned 25 votes of the 50 ballots returned. Todd Robinson finished second with 13 votes. Marino finished the year second to Robinson in points with 90 and led the CHL in goals with 41 and power play goals with 13.

-What a final weekend for the Fort Wayne Komets who entered their three-in-three with the Dayton Gems with a one point lead over the Evansville IceMen who were fast on their heels. The Komets defeated the Gems in all three games with Nick Boucher earning the win in all three contests to finish tied for the league lead with 32 wins. Colin Chaulk led the offensive charge for the Komets with three goals and five assists in those three games. The Komets ended up with 87 points beating the IceMen out by three points and winning the Turner Conference.

-Despite scoring just four goals in their last three games of the season, resulted in a three-game losing streak, the Wichita Thunder edged out the Quad City Mallards as the highest scoring team in the CHL. Wichita finished with 231 goals on the season, one better than the Mallards (230). The Texas Brahmas ended up as the league's top defensive team allowing just 170 goals on the season (their Opening Round opponent Allen was second allowing 175 goals).

-One might expect close games in the playoffs and no team in the CHL this season has been better in the close games than Wichita who is 19-6-3 in one-goal games. Missouri is the top club in the Turner with a 17-5-6 mark in the one-goal games.

-RGV forward Dan Gendur finished the year with a bang scoring three goals with two assists thus topping the Killer Bees all-time single-season record for points with 73 (28-45=73). Gendur beats the old mark set by Jesse Bennefield who had 71 points (35-36=71) in the 2008-09 season. Gendur and the Bees won eight of their last nine games to enter the post-season as one of the hottest teams in the league. Teammate Aaron Lee ends the year as the hottest goal scorer in the CHL with an eight-game goal scoring streak (longest in the CHL this season). Lee finished with a franchise record 38 goals (second in the CHL).

-The Missouri Mavericks finished on a high with their power play scoring a PP goal in eight of their last nine games going 11 for 31 over that stretch (35%). The Mavs ended up as the top team in the CHL and the only club over 20% on the season (21%). Forward Sebastien Thinel finished on an eight-game point streak that saw him score three goals with 12 assists over that span.

-With their overtime loss to the Fort Wayne Komets on Saturday night, the Dayton Gems tied the CHL record for OT/SO losses in a season with 14. The Gems tie the previous record set twice, once in 2006-07 with the Austin IceBats and the other time during the 1998-99 season with Alexandria in the WPHL.
