Shots from the Point for February 28, 2014

February 28, 2014 - Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release

Three Things You Need to Know

1.) February's Conclusion- The month of February comes to an end on Friday with the Missouri Mavericks (33-16-2) and Tulsa Oilers (27-23-3) vying for top honors and the most wins in the month. Both the Mavs and Oilers have eight wins during the month of February but Tulsa has played three fewer games than Missouri. Quad City has seven wins and Brampton and Denver have won six games in the month with Arizona and Wichita each winning five. The St. Charles Chill enter Friday's game against Missouri without a win in February sitting at 0-8-1 in the month. Allen and Rapid City each had four wins in the month.

2.) Rivalry Night- A few big rivalry games highlight Friday night's schedule highlighted by the longest-standing rivalry in the CHL, the Tulsa Oilers (27-23-3) and Wichita Thunder (23-24-4). Friday's game will be the 245th all-time meeting between the two clubs with Wichita owning 126 wins and Tulsa coming out victorious 118 times. This season, the Oilers have gone 5-2-1 versus Wichita. Also on Friday, the second place Denver Cutthroats (26-14-10) and the and third place Rapid City Rush (31-18-1) begin a three-game-in-three nights series with Friday's game in South Dakota and Saturday's and Sunday's in Colorado. The Rush have won seven of the 11 meetings this season but Denver has cut into that advantage with wins in three of the last four meetings. Although not a geographic rival, the Allen Americans (29-18-4) and Arizona Sundogs (24-22-6) go after each other like they were feuding neighbors. The Americans are 23-9-3 in the all-time series and 4-2-1 this season (the teams meet on both Friday and Saturday in Texas).

3.) Three's the Number- There are four CHL teams that streak into the weekend with three-game win streaks; the Allen Americans, Brampton Beast, the Tulsa Oilers and the Rapid City Rush. The Americans are coming off a 4-1 win in Missouri on Tuesday night and have moved up to a tie for third place in the standings with 62 points (Denver also has 62 points). The Rush have been off since Saturday when they finished a two-game sweep over Arizona with an overtime win. Brampton takes their streak to Quad City for a pair of games to face a team that has gone 7-1-3 against them this season and the Oilers are the most rested CHL team playing just one game since February 19. Tulsa enters Friday's game in Wichita with an 8-1-0 record in February.

By the Numbers

6: The current personal win streak of Tulsa goaltender Shane Madolora who has not lost in the month of February posting a league-best 2.17 goals against average and a league-best .932 save percentage. The second-year goalie is 23-18-1 on the season with a 2.96 GAA. Madolora is 9-3-1 with two shutouts in his last 13 decisions.

One-Timers

-The Arizona Sundogs signed forward Shawn Limpright prior to Tuesday's game in Wichita. The former CHL Champ with Bossier-Shreveport in 2011 was an MVP finalist in 2011-12 while a member of the Rapid City Rush when he scored 28 goals with 53 assists and a +22 plus/minus rating. During the Mudbugs Cup run in 2011, the St. Adolphe, Manitoba native scored nine goals (two game winners) with 12 assists in 21 post-season games. He joins David Rutherford and Michael Couch as former championship Mudbugs on the Sundogs roster.

-Denver goalie Kent Patterson backed-up in the AHL on Tuesday night in the Lake Erie Monsters 2-1 loss to the Texas Stars. Patterson was re-called to the Monsters on Monday. Patterson is 21-9-6 on the season with a 6-1-1 mark in his last eight decisions.

-Despite playing in just 35 games this season, St. Charles forward Nicklas Lindberg is nearing the team's scoring lead sitting with 31 points (8-23=31). Kyle O'Kane is the current team leader with 34 points. Lindberg has scored seven points (2-5=7) in his team's last five games.

-After scoring 20 goals over a four-game win streak from Feb. 8-15, the Quad City Mallards offense had fallen on hard times scoring just 12 goals over the next five games (1-4-0 during that stretch). But on Wednesday, the Flock scored five times in their win over the Mavs.
