Rocky Mountain Rage News Release
Broomfield, Colo. - The Rage bench looked bare tonight. With seven players out of the lineup, the Rocky Mountain Rage hockey team's battle for the win came up short as the New Mexico Scorpions defeated the Rage 3-1 at the Broomfield Event Center. The Scorpions completed a two-game sweep headed into the All-Star break.
The Rage fell to 8-20-4 (20 points) for fourth place in the northwest division, while the Scorpions improved to 15-14-3 (33 points) for fourth place in the southwest division.
The New Mexico Scorpions came out to a fast start outshooting the Rage 9-3 early. Rocky Mountain goaltender Trevor Cunning blocked all nine New Mexico shots allowing the Rage to get on the board first. In his fifth game with the Rage, Trevor Weisgerber scored his first goal with the team and 11th goal of the season. He picked up a pass from Craig Olynick from the left circle and shot it over the stick of Scorpions goaltender David Cacciola.
Scorpions defenseman Aaron MacInnis tied the game at 16:33 after tucking the puck in on the stick side of Cunning.
In the second period, Weisgerber arguably gave the Rage one of their best scoring chances of the period on a two-on-one opportunity at 12:02, but Scorpions goaltender stopped the shot just inches from the goal line. New Mexico was able to capitalize on a scoring chance of their own just under one minute later with a goal by Mike Falk, giving New Mexico their first lead of the game.
New Mexico came out to a quick start again in the third period. Ryan McLeod of New Mexico picked up the puck at center ice for a one-on-one breakaway in the opening seconds, but McLeod could not beat Rage goaltender Cunning.
Despite end to end action, both teams remained scoreless for much of the final period. Scorpions left winger Craig MacDonald added an empty net goal at 19:51 to seal the New Mexico win.
The Rage returns to action after the CHL All-Star Game break next week. The Rage will travel to play the Corpus Christi Rays and Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees Jan. 19-20, respectively.
