Joliet JackHammers News Release
The Joliet JackHammers received 5.2 scoreless innings from Rory Shortell and Justin Justice collected his first home run of the season as Joliet shut out Lake County 2-0 Thursday night at Silver Cross Field.
The JackHammers (11-9) got on the board first in the third frame against Zach Ward (1-3). Justice led off with a single and Roberto Mena doubled down the right field line to put runners at second and third. After a Jorge Rodriguez groundout, Jonathan Wyatt slapped a ground ball to second to give the JackHammers a 1-0 lead.
Justice added some insurance for Joliet in the eighth, leading off the inning with his first home run this season. Justice hit a long fly ball over the wall in right against Jake Ruckle to put the JackHammers up 2-0.
The Fielders (7-13) couldn't manage anything against four different Joliet pitchers. Shortell picked up his first victory, striking out a JackHammer season high seven hitters while only allowing five hits.
Mike Rocco, Griffin Bailey and Drew Shetrone combined to toss 3.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen, allowing one hit while striking out four. Shetrone earned his fifth save, striking out the side in the ninth.
Justice led the offense with two hits, scoring the only two runs for Joliet. Mena and Freddie Thon had the other two JackHammer hits.
The JackHammers travel to Rockford tomorrow night for the first of three with the RiverHawks. Bear Bay (2-2) will face off against Kyle Wright (2-1) on the bump. First pitch is slated for 6:05 p.m. with a 5:55 p.m. pre-game show on 1340 WJOL.
