Rockford IceHogs News Release

Rockford, Ill.- The Rockford IceHogs began Wednesday night's contest against the Fort Wayne Komets with only 14 active skaters and suffered their worst defeat of the season, 5-0, in front of 2,668 at the Rockford MetroCentre. Fort Wayne took advantage of their scoring opportunities and goalie Kevin St. Pierre stopped 38 Rockford shots, including 21 in the third period to lead the charge.

After a scoreless first period, the Komets capitalized at the 5:39 mark of the second when Chris Grenville tapped home a perfect 2-on-1 feed from Dustin Virag. Winger Danny Stewart then extended the lead to 2-0 at 13:40 of the second period, chipping in a loose puck past Hogs goalie Michel Robinson.

The Komets added two more before the break to put the IceHogs in a big hole. Sean Venedam deflected in a marker at 18:11, to make the contest 3-0. In an effort to get back into the game, the Hogs pulled Robinson on a power play for a 6-on-4 advantage. But Komets defenseman Troy Neumeier took advantage and fired home a short-handed goal into the empty net, making the score 4-0 at the second intermission.

With Fort Wayne settling into a defensive set in the third period, the Hogs were still able to pepper St. Pierre with a season high 21 shots. The only goal of the frame came on a 3-on-1 breakaway when Grenville knocked in his second tally of the night.

Next Home Game: Friday, December 10 vs. Quad City Mallards. Game time is 7:05 p.m. The IceHogs return home from a three-game road trip for a three-game weekend. The first 1,000 fans to the game will receive an IceHogs Smash Hit Hockey Poster #3 from Medicine Man, Johnson Press, Pepsi, Rockford Register Star and 97ZOK.
