Spokane Shock News Release
The Spokane Shock announced today that Matt Sauk has been added to the 2008 coaching staff as the Assistant Head Coach. Sauk's responsibilities will include coaching the Quarterbacks and Receivers.
Over the course of his seven-year af2 and AFL career, Sauk distinguished himself as one of the most prolific Quarterbacks to ever play the game of Arena football. Sauk rewrote the af2 record book, throwing for 17,142 yards, and 345 touchdowns in his career. He ranks in the top five in six different categories, and still holds the record for most passes completed in a season (405).
In 2005, Sauk was named the af2 Offensive Player of the Year and led the Louisville Fire to their first-ever appearance in the ArenaCup. That season, Sauk flourished under Offensive Coordinator Adam Shackleford, throwing 4,489 yards and 99 touchdowns. The previous season, he threw for 76 touchdowns and 4370 yards in Shackleford's offense.
Sauk finished his illustrious career in 2007 as a member of the AFL's Grand Rapids Rampage. In addition, Sauk played for the AFL's Nashville Kats, the Los Angeles Avengers, and the Philadelphia Soul.
"He (Matt Sauk) is one of the smartest Quarterback's I've ever worked with," Shackleford said. "He has a passion and an understanding for this game that is unparallel."
Sauk is also excited to be reunited with Shackleford, who he says is "one of the only coaches I've ever considered working with."
"I knew that he would be successful and I wanted to be a part of that," Sauk continued.
Sauk, a Utah State graduate, and his wife Michelle have two children: a 5-year old daughter Aysha, and a one-year old daughter Trinity. Sauk is the final addition to Shackleford's coaching staff that already includes Defensive Coordinator Alex Sirianni and Line Coach Steve Emtman.
