Spokane Shock News Release
February 7, 2006 - The Spokane Shock announced today that former Eastern Eagle Raul Vijil, Antomius Wise, and Levi Madarieta have been assigned to their inaugural roster by the arenafootball2 League office. To make room on the roster, the Shock designated Donte Wells for reassignment.
Vijil, 5'10 190, participated in the team's open try-out last week and made a distinct impression on Head Coach Chris Siegfried.
"Raul's highlight tape was real impressive and so I was anxious to see his abilities in person," Siegfried explained. "Not only did he meet my expectations but he exceeded them. As a wide receiver, he runs great routes and has great hands."
As a senior at Eastern, Vijil was second in the Big Sky Conference (and on the team) in receptions (72), touchdowns (8) and yards (1280). This will be his first year of Arena Football.
Joining Vijil will be Defensive Specialist Wise. Wise, 6'3" 215, will also be in his first year of Arena football after a successful college career at Lambuth University. As a senior, Wise, a defensive back, led the team in pass break-ups (7) was 10th on the team in tackles (27) and became an important piece of their 2004 playoff run.
"Antomius brings us a player with a lot of talent as a cover specialist; he will be a real asset to our defense," Siegfried said.
Madarieta, 6'3" 250 will line up on both sides of the ball as a FB/LB. Madarieta, originally from Idaho, attended Brigham Young University for three years after transferring from the University of Washington. After his senior season, he was selected to play in the All-American Classic despite an injury that limited him to playing in eight of the Cougars 12 games. He finished that season with 30 tackles including 12 solo tackles with four tackles that combined for a 15-yard loss. After his senior season, Madarieta signed a free agent contract with the National Football League's New York Giants before being released shortly before the regular season. More recently, Madarieta signed a contract with the Arena Football League's Utah Blaze, but was released during their pre-season training camp.
"Madarieta has great size and I have had my eye on him for awhile now, so I'm really happy that we will be able to bring him into camp," Siegfried said.
The Spokane Shock's roster now stands at 30 players; 35 players will be brought into training camp with 22 roster spots available for the regular season.
