Detroit Shock News Release

Auburn Hills, MI - Tickets to the Detroit Shock's first 2006 WNBA Playoff Game will go on sale this evening as the Shock play host to Kristin Haynie and the Sacramento Monarchs at The Palace of Auburn Hills. The Palace Box Office opens at 6 p.m. with tip-off for tonight's game at 7:30 p.m. Fans who purchase tickets to Detroit's first home playoff game will also receive an equivalent number of tickets to a Pistons 2006-07 preseason game at The Palace. Tickets may also be purchased on-line at www.detroitshock.com, or by phone at 248-377-0100.

Detroit clinched its postseason berth on Tuesday, July 25 when the Charlotte Sting lost to the Minnesota Lynx, and the Indiana Fever defeated the Sacramento Monarchs. Heading into this evening's game with Sacramento, the Shock is in second place in the Eastern Conference, two games back of the front-running Connecticut Sun. Detroit owns the tiebreaker over Connecticut, so if the teams finish the season with identical regular season records, the Shock would receive the higher seed. The teams square off against one another in the final game of the 2006 WNBA regular season on August 13 on ABC at 1:30 p.m.

The top four seeds in each conference advance to the postseason. Specific playoff dates and game times will be announced at the conclusion of the regular season.

The first round of the playoffs is a best-two-out-of-three format, and begins on either Thursday, August 17 or Friday, August 18 at the home site of the lower seed. The higher seed hosts the second game and, if necessary, the third game of the series.

The second round of the playoffs is also a best-two-out-of-three format, and runs from August 24-27 with game one of the Conference Finals at the home site of the lower seed on August 24.

The finals moved to a best-three-out-of-five, 2-2-1 format a year ago, with the higher seed hosting the first two games and a possible fifth game, and the lower seed hosting game three and, if necessary, game four. The last possible date for the 2006 WNBA Playoffs is Friday, September 9.

This is the fifth overall appearance for Detroit in the WNBA Playoffs and its fourth in a row since winning the 2003 WNBA Championship. Only the Houston Comets (1997-2003) and the Los Angeles Sparks (1999-2006) have ever had a longer streak of postseason appearances than Detroit.

Lennox is the presenting sponsor for the 2006 Detroit Shock. The Shock's next home game is Tuesday, August 1 at 8 p.m. vs. Tamika Catchings and the third-place Indiana Fever on ESPN2.
