Detroit signs former Shock guard Elaine Powell

Auburn Hills, MI - Detroit Shock Head Coach and Director of Player Personnel Bill Laimbeer announced today that the Shock has signed former Detroit guard Elaine Powell. Per team policy financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Powell, 31, was one of the original members of the expansion Chicago Sky having been plucked from the Shock roster during the off-season Expansion Draft. She played in 14 games for Chicago averaging 4.9 points and 2.6 assists in 18.1 minutes of action. She also missed eight games this season due to shin splints. The Sky waived Powell on Sunday, July 23. After clearing waivers, she was free to sign with any team.

Now in her eighth WNBA season, Powell was originally drafted 50th overall in the 1999 WNBA draft by the Orlando Miracle. The Shock acquired her in a 2002 trade along with a 2003 first round draft pick in exchange for Wendy Palmer and a second round pick. Powell averaged 9.0 points, 3.9 assists in 28.4 minutes during the Shock's 2003 Championship season. She also boasts averages of 4.9 points, 4.9 assists and 1.54 steals in 13-career playoff games.
