Spokane Shock News Release
SPOKANE, WA (March 2, 2014) - The Shock wrapped up the first week of their 2014 Training Camp with their first open scrimmage on Saturday.
Season ticket holders were in attendance and had their first opportunity to pick up their season ticket packages yesterday with a second opportunity approaching on Tuesday, March 4th at EPIC of Northern Quest Resort and Casino from 5:30 to 8:00 pm.
The end of week one of Training Camp also meant the first set of roster cuts for the Shock, trimming the roster down from 35 men to 28.
Shock Head Coach Andy Olson liked the competition he saw during the first week of camp and the open scrimmage.
"The competition was very good in that first week, the scrimmage was fantastic today," he said. "A couple of guys really stood out and made their names known. Overall, very happy with where we're at and we've got another week to progress."
Olson said that many new players have impressed himself and the coaching staff over the last week, including defensive lineman Brandon Sharpe and offensive lineman Mark Jackson. Also, the local product of Rogers High School and the University of Montana Levi Horn stood out amongst the offensive line group.
Competition is deep at every position, but nowhere is it tougher than within the offensive line and defensive backs.
"We've been extremely consistent up front and that's one of the most important pieces of this game and those guys have done a great job," Olson said. "There's still a lot of positions out there that we're going to have to let go of players that we really don't want to let go of."
With one week left before the season begins Olson said he would like to see improvement in the wide receivers the most, but that he sees no reason the current group of guys can't get it done.
"They had a very good scrimmage today and I was very happy with that, but I still think we've got a long ways to go at receiver," he said.
After a day off today, the Shock get back to the practice field on Monday morning. The Shock kick off their 2014 season on Mar. 15 at home against the Iowa Barnstormers at 7 p.m.
