Portland Thunder Scrimmage Report
March 2, 2014 - Arena Football League (AFL)
Portland Thunder News Release
PORTLAND, OR - Only 28 players will remain on the Thunder squad after the first round of cuts on Monday, March 3. In the last day of action before cuts are made, every member of the team played like they deserved to be on the roster.
"It was a very good scrimmage," said Head Coach Matthew Sauk. "There wasn't a time where either the defense or offense was dominating - it felt like both sides really played well and either made stops or scored."
Defensive back Bryce Peila had an especially big day, intercepting two passes and returning one to the end zone.
"[Peila] is picking up this game so fast, and his hands are amazing," Sauk said. "It's exactly what I saw on film."
The March 1 scrimmage was for season-ticket holders only, as they got the first preview of the talent the Thunder will be bringing to the Moda Center on March 17.
"I thought it was fun because of the smaller field," said Ian Loney, one of the many children attending the event, "and because you could get right behind the players' bench."
Practices from March 3-8 will be open to the public at Tualatin Indoor Soccer and take place from 12-2 p.m. daily. The Portland Thunder will kick off its inaugural season at the Moda Center on Monday, March 17th when they take on the San Jose SaberCats. Season tickets are available for purchase starting as low as $99 by calling 503-773-4AFL or by visiting www.portlandthunder.com.
