Spokane Shock News Release

June 19, 2009 - Spokane, WA: The Spokane Shock announced today that DL/FB Johnie Kirton from the University of Washington has been assigned to the 2009 roster. In other roster moves, DB Virgil Gray has been activated from the team's Other League Exempt list and DL Jeff Van Orsow has been placed on injured reserve. LB Lee Foliaki remains on team leave to take care of a family matter in Texas. Foliaki is not expected to return for the remainder of the season.

Kirton, 6-3 285, arrived at Washington as a tailback but spent time as a tight end, nose guard, and a member of the special teams unit. During the 2006 season, Kirton tied for fifth on the team in receiving with 12 catches for 93 yards. Kirton spent his senior season at nose guard where he accumulated 27 tackles and one forced fumble.

"We know he can play D-line, but we are also looking at him as a fullback," said Head Coach Adam Shackleford. "He's got a great first step. We expect him to play well and he's excited to get back on the field."

Gray, 5-10 188, joins the Shock for the 2009 season after spending his rookie year with the Lubbock Renegades where he lead the team in tackles (85.5) and interceptions (8) and finished second in pass break-ups (25). Gray was signed by the Shock before training camp but was placed on Other League Exempt at the beginning of the season after signing with the Canadian Football League's Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Gray was recently released by Hamilton during their training camp.

Both Gray and Kirton are eligible to play Saturday against the Tri-Cities Fever.

Tickets for the game are still available and can be purchased by contacting TicketsWest.
