October 10, 2007 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release

Hidalgo, Texas --- The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees today announced that forward Ryan Shmyr has been selected as the No. 2 most popular franchise player of all time as chosen by online fan voting at www.killerbeehockey.com.

Shmyr will be among those invited back to the Dodge Arena on January 5, 2008, for "Five at the Hive Night." The Killer Bees will honor the fans' top 5 favorite players that night in a pre-game ceremony, among other events planned for the evening.

2. Ryan Shmyr (2003-06) - Shmyr's franchise penalty minute total (748) may never be equaled. Known throughout the league as one the most feared enforcers during his time with the Bees, Shmyr also had a timely knack for finding the back of the net. Among his 35 goals scored as a Bee, Shmyr's eight game-winners place him third all-time on the franchise list. He is currently playing in England.

Catching up with Ryan Shmyr

Where are you playing now?

For the Nottingham Panthers in England. We won the league championship last season.

What was winning the championship like for you?

It was awesome. It is so hard to have everything come together at the right point in one season, which is what makes it so satisfying to win it. It is something I will never forget.

What's different about playing in England?

The thing I most enjoy is the opportunity to travel around Europe while playing here. I was able to travel to Switzerland, France, Rome, Amsterdam, and the Greek Islands last season and I am looking forward to seeing more of the world this season.

In your three years as a Killer Bee, what is your most memorable moment?

It is difficult to pick one moment when I think of playing for the Killer Bees. So many good memories come to mind. So many friendships, so many good times, and of course lots of battles with Laredo!
