
Shengelia's Record-Setting Night Leads Springfield Past Maine

Springfield, Mass. - The Springfield Armor, presented by MGM Springfield, defeated the Maine Red Claws 123-115 tonight at the MassMutual Center. Toko Shengelia, on assignment to the Armor from the Brooklyn Nets, tied a franchise record with 39 points on 17-of-21 shooting to go along with a game-high 18 rebounds, six assists and three steals in the victory.
The Armor (7-15) got off to a sluggish start tonight and trailed by as many as 17 points (32-15) in the first quarter. Springfield bounced back with a 7-0 run in the final 1:45 of the first to trim the deficit to 32-24. The Armor carried the momentum into the second quarter, beginning the frame on a 20-6 run to pull ahead 42-38 midway through the quarter. Neither team could gain a consistent upper hand toward the end of the first half as the Armor headed into intermission with a 60-58 lead over the Red Claws (16-9).
The third quarter featured 13 ties and lead changes, with neither team managing to build a lead larger than four points in the period. A DaJuan Summers' jumper broke an 84-84 tie and gave the Red Claws an 86-84 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth, the Armor broke the game open with a decisive 10-2 run in just under four minutes that began with a Shengelia dunk at the 9:09 mark of the quarter and ended with a Willie Reed put-back dunk at the 5:16 mark. The Armor didn't trail again en route to a season-high-tying 39 fourth-quarter points to seal the victory.
Shengelia's 39 points were the most scored by an Armor player since Dec. 15, 2009 (Morris Almond). Shengelia set a new single-game franchise record with 17 made-field goals and in two games in the NBA D-League this season, Shengelia is averaging 30.5 points on .639 shooting, 14.0 rebounds and 9.0 assists in 43.5 minutes per game.
Tyshawn Taylor, also on assignment from the Brooklyn Nets, recorded a double-double of his own with 21 points, 10 assists and just three turnovers in 44 minutes. James Mays added 21 points and six rebounds in 39 minutes, Willie Reed tallied 17 points in 34 minutes and Ben Uzoh posted 16 points and six assists in 35 minutes. The Armor's starting five combined to score 114 of the team's 123 points tonight.
As a team, the Armor set a new single-game franchise record for made field goals (50) and new single-game season-highs for field goal percentage (55.6%) and assists (31).
DaJuan Summers led the Red Claws tonight with 34 points and 10 rebounds in 33 minutes. Chris Wright scored 17 points in 24 minutes, Champ Oguchi chipped in 15 points in 22 minutes, Fab Melo, on assignment from the Boston Celtics, contributed 13 points and nine rebounds in 25 minutes, Micah Downs added 13 points in 41 minutes and Andre Barrett dished out 16 assists (with just two turnovers) in 38 minutes.
The Armor return to action on Saturday evening when they host the Santa Cruz Warriors at 7:00 pm at the MassMutual Center. The Red Claws return home and will take on the Warriors tomorrow night at 7:00 pm at the Portland Expo.
