Sharpen up Passing: Ingredients of the Match
Published on June 23, 2023 under Major League Soccer (MLS)
Charlotte FC News Release
Charlotte FC and CF Montreal are separated by a slim two-point margin in the Eastern Conference. Charlotte FC aims to regain their dominant home form and secure a full three points as they confront a formidable C.F. Montreal side, who have triumphed in six consecutive home matches but encountered difficulties on their travels.
Here are the three ingredients of the match against Montreal:
Stick to Your Game
Charlotte FC showcased their prowess in the opening 20 minutes against the Red Bulls by implementing their strategic approach. They exhibited an aggressive defensive press, maintained possession with quick interchanges, and disrupted the Red Bulls' defensive structure through clever off-ball runs. Their impressive efforts yielded two well-deserved goals.
However, following their two-goal advantage, the team adopted a more cautious approach. Their press became less assertive, enabling the Red Bulls to regain control and gradually reenter the contest. Head Coach Christian Lattanzio emphasized in the post-match press conference that deviating from their game was the decisive factor in relinquishing all three points on that occasion.
It's crucial to highlight the significance of this lesson, particularly with regards to the upcoming match against Montreal, whose style bears similarities to that of the Red Bulls. The team must remain committed to their game, leveraging the energy of the crowd to amplify their performance and ensure a successful outcome.
Sharpen Up Passing
"We have to play better with the ball, I will keep drumming that into our boys. It is the one thing that leaves me with a bitter taste in the mouth," said Lattanzio expressing his dissatisfaction for how his team utilized the ball when they had it.
Keeping possession stands as a fundamental element of Charlotte's style of play, yet it becomes challenging when the passing accuracy falters. The team's struggles to extend their lead or even transition out of their defensive half against the Red Bulls were largely attributed to errant passes. Whether the execution of the pass itself was subpar or the decision-making regarding pass selection was inadequate, both contributed to the team's difficulties.
Maintaining the ability to execute precise passes is crucial for executing their game plan, particularly when their attacking system relies heavily on it. Crisper passing not only fosters increased possession, but also generates scoring opportunities while minimizing the chances for their opponents to capitalize on turnovers.
Take Care of Business
A notable transformation from the previous season to the current one is Charlotte's ability to accumulate points on the road. With 15 matches still to be played this season, Charlotte has already surpassed their total away points earned from the previous season.
Despite their limited away points in the previous season, Charlotte remained in playoff contention until the end thanks to their strong performances on home turf. Given the competitive nature of the league, winning the majority of home games can almost guarantee a spot in the playoffs come the end of the season. Taking care of business at home is a near sure way to stay in the running for playoffs.
Currently, Charlotte possesses a decent home record of three wins, three draws, and three losses. However, when facing a direct playoff contender like Montreal, an additional level of urgency is necessary. It's imperative for Charlotte to seize the opportunity, leveraging the advantage of the home crowd, to secure a full three points against a team that has struggled in their away matches this season.
