Sharks Win Lightning-Shortened Nailbiter
June 2, 2018 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Wilmington Sharks News Release
As the lightning moved closer to Buck Hardee Field the Sharks were threatening in the bottom of the eight. On a full count with two outs and a runner on third, Ward Coleman poked a single in to right field to restore Wilmington's lead 5-4.
That base hit ultimately was the game winner as Mother Nature had enough and sent the game into a lightning delay after eight innings. After 30 minutes passed the game was called and Wilmington (2-1) took the victory over Holly Springs (1-2).
The Sharks got the on board first for the third time this season. To lead off the bottom of the second, Danny Wondrack smacked his first homer of the summer to straightaway center field.
Wilmington added to its early lead in the third. With runners on the corners Kevon Perkins drove home Wil Hoyle to extend the lead to 2.
The Salamanders however fought back in the sixth. Through five innings, Sharks starter Caleb Bishop was tossing a gem on the night New Hanover was honored for winning another State Title. However, in the sixth Bishop got in to trouble with a couple walks and then allowed a 2-run double off the left field wall.
Ayden Karraker and the Sharks answered in the ensuing half inning. With two outs, Karraker launched his first home run to left field to restore the lead. Wilmington then added one more run after four consecutive singles but that was all as Ward Coleman was out at home trying to score a second run on Michael Varga's single.
However, the visitors answered again. Out of the bullpen Sam Luchansky (1-0) surrender a walk and allowed three straight singles before getting out of the seventh inning with the game knotted back up at four.
Then in the eighth, Ward Coleman singled home Ayden Karraker to score the deciding run.
3-4-5 in the Sharks lineup did all the damage tonight. Ayden Karraker, Danny Wondrack and Ward Coleman were a combined 7 for 12 with 2 HR, 3 RBI and 4 runs scored.
Maddex Richardson (0-1) picked up the loss allowing one run on two hits with a strikeout in his lone inning of work.
The Sharks are back in action tomorrow night at home to face the Fayetteville SwampDogs. First pitch is at 6:05 and gates will open at 5. The Sharks Pregame Show begins at 5:50.
