Wilmington Sharks News Release
It was a disappointing night for the Sharks at the plate at Big Rock Stadium. Wilmington (1-1) struck out 18 times against Morehead City (1-1) in a 4-1 loss.
Marlins starter Perry DellaValle brought his best stuff, striking out 12 Sharks batter in just 5.2 innings.
Even on a night the Sharks struggled, Wilmington broke through first in the top of the fourth inning. With two outs Danny Wondrack and Ward Coleman drew back-to-back walks to put runners on first and second with two outs. Then, Joe Gruszka laced a ground ball through the legs of Marlins first baseman Ari Sechopoulos to double home the game's first run.
That was it for the visitors though as Morehead City scored the next four runs of the contest. In the bottom half of the fourth, Joe Mason started the inning with a double off the left field wall. The Marlins left fielder came around to score two batters later on a ground out to third base.
Two innings later, Brendan Dougherty led off the inning with a solo shot to right field off Sharks starter Dylan Gibeau (0-1). The blast put the Marlins up 2-1, a lead they would not relinquish.
In the 8th , Morehead City took advantage of four walks by the Sharks pitching staff to push across 2 more runs.
The 4-1 lead was all Kenny Wells (1) would need to shut the door on the Sharks for a 6-out save and his first of the summer. Marlins reliever Mason Duke (1-0) scored his first win of the summer recording the final out of the sixth inning after three walks.
After splitting the first two games of the season, the Sharks and Marlins do not meet again until June 11 back in Morehead City.
Wilmington returns home tomorrow to face the Holly Springs Salamanders for the first time this summer. The Sharks Pregame Show starts at 6:50 tomorrow evening followed by first pitch at 7:05. The first 500 kids to the Shark Tank tomorrow will receive a free hat and the gates open at 6! For tickets call 910-343-5621 or go online at www.wilmingtonsharks.com.
