Sharks Unable to Get Bats Going

July 18, 2019 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Wilmington Sharks News Release

Wilmington, North Carolina-The Edenton Steamers held the Wilmington Sharks to just one run in two games in a doubleheader sweep Wednesday night at Buck Hardee Field. The Sharks fell 9-1 in game one and 2-0 in game two dropping to 6-4 in the second half of play.

Offensively, the Sharks could not get anything going in either game. Steamers starters Payton Rice and Walker Cleveland each going the distance resting their bullpen for the entirety of the doubleheader.

Rice recorded a total of ten strikeouts in game one including striking out the side in the fourth inning. He kept his shutout bid intact until there were two outs in the seventh when CJ Conrad reached on a fielding error that scored Chad Fairey to put the Sharks on the board.

In game two, Cleveland faced the minimum through the fifth inning. The Sharks had three base runners via singles during that stretch, but they were all erased by a pick off, a caught stealing, and a double play respectively. Aaron McKeithan singled with one out in the sixth for the Sharks ending Cleveland's bid of facing the minimum. McKeithan was ultimately stranded. Cleveland came back out and struck out the side in the seventh to record the complete game shutout.

In game one, the Steamers jumped out early with three consecutive singles to begin the game, loading the bases with nobody out. The Steamers ultimately scored two runs that inning. The Steamers also loaded the bases with nobody out with the bottom third of their lineup to begin the fourth and ended up batting around, scoring a total of five runs to take a commanding 7-0 lead.

The Steamers also hit three straight singles, once again loading the bases with nobody out to begin the second inning of game two. Sharks starter Austin Skipper then retired two in a row but allowed a two-out bases loaded walk to make it 1-0 Edenton.

The Sharks will be back in action Thursday night at the Shark Tank against the Morehead City Marlins. It is Thirsty Thursday featuring $1 beers presented by 98.7 Coastal Carolina's Modern Rock. The gates will open at 6:00PM for a 7:05PM first pitch.
