Corpus Christi Sharks News Release
Corpus Christi Sharks Vice President/General Manager, Larry Linde announced today that the Sharks have agreed in principle to a trade with the Green Bay Blizzard pending league approval.
The Sharks further solidified their roster for the stretch run of the season by sending former starting QB Brian Villanueva to the Green Bay Blizzard for offensive lineman Kirbie Bodiford and WR / DB Quorey Payne. Both Bodiford and Payne were starters for the 5-3 Blizzard.
Bodiford, who play collegiately at Troy, is a 6' 4" 310 pounder who should contribute immediately on the Offensive Line. Bodiford had an impressive first half of the season on the Blizzard line and has participated at Tight End as well. He's expected to compete for a starting position while adding depth to a Sharks offensive line that is already among the top units in the league. "Bodiford can play all three positions up front and has the athleticism to handle the edge protection", said Sharks Head Coach Mike Trigg.
The Sharks also received WR/DB Quorey Payne, (5'9" 182lbs). Payne was the second leading receiver for the Blizzard this year and the former Southern Illinois Saluki has experience at DB as well - providing the Sharks added depth and versatility. "Quorey is a swing guy with decent speed and versatility", said Trigg. "He's a quality receiver with af2 experience and may even see some time at Defensive Back".
Trigg went on to add, "Our priority heading into the trade deadline was to evaluate all opportunities that were out there for us. The need to improve our offensive consistency in the second half of the season was a goal. With (QB) Fran Johnson's 3-1 record as a starter, we have something to build on and this deal has us moving in the right direction. When opportunity knocks, you have to make the best of the situation and receiving 2 Offensive Starters from one of the top programs in the af2 was the right move."
The Sharks travel to Arkansas this week to take on the Twisters on Saturday night. Trigg did not rule out the possibility that one or both players will be active for the game. The Sharks will return to the American Bank Center on Saturday June 7th to take on the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz. June 7th is Faith and Football night with a free post game concert by Contemporary Christian artists, Come December. Tickets for the game are available for as low as $11.
