Sharks Outlast Tobs in Pitcher's Duel

June 26, 2016 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Wilmington Sharks News Release

Both of Sunday's starters threw six compete innings, but it was the Wilmington Sharks (14-9) who eventually broke through to take down the Wilson Tobs (12-11) by a score of 4-3.

Wilmington got on the board first in the fifth inning when Madison Stokes (South Carolina) and Alec Bohm (Wichita State) hit back to back RBI singles. Wilson responded with an RBI double in the bottom of the inning, but left two on to end the inning trailing 2-1.

The Sharks added some much needed insurance in the eighth inning, when Nick Rotola (Oral Roberts) hit a double in the gap to bring home two. Leading 4-1, the Sharks turned to Steven Powels (St. Joseph's) to close the door. The Tobs scored a run in the eighth, but left the bases loaded. In the ninth, the Tobs added another run to make it a 4-3 game, but left the tying run on base when Powels got the final out of the game.

The win went to Ethan Wortkoetter (2-1). He threw six innings, with four hits, one unearned run, three walks and six strikeouts. Travis Holden (1-1) took the loss, pitching six innings, allowing two runs on nine hits, two walks and striking out six. Steven Powels (4) pitched the last two innings and allowed two runs, one earned, on two hits and two walks, but struck out three batters in the ninth.

The Sharks return home for a four game home stand next week, starting on Monday night when they host Savannah for Dollar Dog Monday.
