Sharks Lose Home Finale

August 2, 2018 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Wilmington Sharks News Release

Ward Coleman was all over the field for the Sharks in the 11-4 loss to the SwampDogs. Literally, Mr. Shark played all nine positions for Wilmington (16-32, 9-14) against Fayetteville (24-24, 11-12).

In the first, Coleman started at first base and his team allowed two runs. Austin Skipper walked one and gave up a couple doubles to fall behind.

In the next two innings, Ward Coleman played second and short but did not have the ball hit to him.

In the bottom of the third, the Sharks took the lead. After Ayden Karraker's groundout put the Sharks on the board, Paxton Wallace stepped in with one on and two outs. The Wichita State freshman crushed a two run homer of the left center wall to put the Sharks on top 3-2.

In the fourth, Coleman played third base and the ball did not come his way. He then moved out to left field in the fifth and was still not called upon to record an out.

In the sixth, the SwampDogs added six runs with Ward Coleman in center field. Fayetteville sent 11 hitters to the plate and scored the six runs on four hits, two walks and two hit batters. Coleman would end the inning though on a fly out hit to the warning track in straight away center.

In the seventh, the SwampDogs added two more with Ward Coleman in right field; seven innings and seven different positions for Mr. Shark.

In the eighth, Coleman headed behind the plate to catch for the first time since high school for New Hanover High School. The redshirt sophomore recorded a pop out in foul territory for the second out of the inning.

The final inning of the night was Coleman's time to shine. In the top of the frame, Ward pitched a scoreless inning striking out Trevor Hafner to end the top of the ninth. In the bottom of the inning, Mr. Shark singled to left field and scored the Sharks fourth run of the night.

In his final Sharks home game after three years, Ward Coleman went 1-4 with a run scored, pitched one scoreless inning, allowing one hit, one walk, one hit batter and one strikeout and also played all nine positions in the field.

As the Marlins clinched the second half in the East Division, the Fayetteville SwampDogs clinched the second playoff spot in the East.

The Sharks are on the road tomorrow to face the Edenton Steamers. First pitch from Historic Hicks Field is at 7:00. The game can be streamed here: portal.stretchinternet.com/cplsteamers/
